UKRAINE: President Petro Poroshenko was soundly defeated Sunday by comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who impersonates Poroshenko on television. Exit polls showed Zelenskiy receiving 73% of the vote in the second round of Ukraine’s presidential election, to Poroshenko’s 25%. “To all post-Soviet countries: look at us. Everything is possible,” Zelenskiy said Sunday.
CANADA: Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney is the new Premier of Alberta, elected by a landslide Tuesday. The leader of the new United Conservative Party was declared the winner, over New Democratic incumbent Rachel Notley, less than an hour after polls closed. “Today, we Albertans begin to fight back,” Kenney told his supporters.
