- A group associated with Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is looking to unseat Democratic congressman they don't feel are progressive enough.
- Moderate Democrats are "looking over their shoulders."
- Will the Democrats be the party of the American worker or the party of socialism.
Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) shocked the political establishment when she was elected to the House of Representatives without any major political experience to speak of. Since her election Ocasio-Cortez has championed some of the most liberal and progressive policies ever to be discussed in the halls of the U.S. Congress.
AOC has supported the abolition of ICE, Medicare for all, and cutting aid to Israel. Do to her controversial politics she has made a fair amount of enemies, many of which are members of her own party. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently went after AOC and the three other freshman representatives who voted against Republican measures that would help fund humanitarian assistance at the border. In a recent New York Times interview regarding the four dissentious lawmakers Pelosi said, “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world. But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”
The representatives signed a statement regarding their unwillingness to vote for the bill. The statement, referring to immigration enforcement agencies, read in part “These radicalized, criminal agencies are destroying families and killing innocent children.”
Recently Justice Democrats, the organization that helped to get AOC elected and was founded by her chief of staff, has been looking to get more Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Congress, not by taking the seats of Republicans but by purging the Democratic party of those they don’t feel are liberal or progressive enough. The group has already targeted two prominent Democrats, seven term Tex. Rep. Henry Cuellar and sixteen term New York Rep. Eliot Engel.
Everyone on capitol hill who doesn’t fall in line with the highly liberal agenda of AOC and her allies are worried they’re next. “Members are looking over their shoulders,” Kentucky Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth said. Democratic Rep. Don Beyer added, “It’s not just older white men, but everybody including younger incumbent women is looking over their left shoulder.”
This comes at a time when the Democratic party is having an identity crises. They are faced with a choice, should they be the party of working class middle America, or should they be the party of socialism? Should they be the party of Biden or Bernie? As senators and representatives like Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders, and Kamala Harris pull the Democrats more to the left, more moderate congressmen like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer must fight to keep their place in the party.
