The Chief Rabbi of Sfat Defends Rafi Peretz for His Opposition to Parts of the Gay Agenda

  • Rafi Peretz is objecting to the false claims about the joy of gay life where LBGTQ are becoming missionaries working to convince the world that gay people can change their gender and have a better life.
  • Only on the issue of gender reassignment surgery did the Rabbi object to the government assisting this type of conversion, saying that it should be prohibited by law and not be sponsored by government Health Insurance.
  • Although Israel is a democracy like America, when the government is controlled by conservatives it can influence Israel from the right.

The LBGTQ community went out July 14 in protest against the statements of Rafi Peretz, the newly selected Minister of Education in the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. Minister Peretz, an Orthodox Jew, is firmly against Israel supporting surgeries for people to change their genders. As Minister of Education, Rafi Peretz feels it is important to provide therapy to those that are influenced to change their lives drastically and even to go through surgery to change their bodies to become transgender.

Shmuel Eliyahu (born 29 November 1956) is the Israeli Orthodox Chief Rabbi of Safed and a member of the Chief Rabbinate Council.

First comes sex education like any educational institution provides to their children regarding sexually transmitted diseases and their prevention.  There are also issues which children from secular backgrounds should know about becoming gay– its plus and minus to understand intellectually what is gay life before deciding to experiment.  Rafi Peretz is objecting to the false claims about the joy of gay life where LBGTQ are becoming missionaries working to convince the world that gay people can change their gender and have a better life.

Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, the son of the former Chief Rabbi Mordecai Eliyahu and the Chief Rabbi of the city of Sfat, called on the public to support normality, common sense and the way of making families consistent with a mother and father of opposite genders. He came out in support of Rafi Peretz for his strong stand on maintaining education in Israel according to the morality of the fathers and mothers– the ancestors of Israel and the Jewish people. Rabbi Eliyahu did not speak against freedom and democracy.  He did not intend to take away from the secular Israeli free choice.  Only on the issue of gender reassignment surgery did the Rabbi object to the government assisting this type of conversion, saying that it should be prohibited by law and not be sponsored by government Health Insurance.

Rafi Peretz is the new Minister of Education, appointed by Netanyahu. A former military officer who served as the Chief Military Rabbi of the Israel Defense Forces, he is currently leader of the Jewish Home party and a member of the Knesset for the United Right alliance.

Rabbi Eliyahu defended democracy by saying that in a democracy there are two sides which are allowed to publicize their opinions within the law. Rafi Peretz represents those Israeli who are of the opinion that LBGTQ moral values are wrong and harmful to the Israeli society. He has the right to speak out against these values as much as LBGTQ has the right to express their opinions.  Therefore Rabbi Eliyahu defended Rafi Peretz and is against those that demand for Netanyahu to fire him from his position.  He said, “They believe only their opinion.”

Although Israel is a democracy like America, when the government is controlled by conservatives it can influence Israel from the right.  Likud is conservative but not religious right.  Netanyahu is somewhat caught in the middle of this dispute but he needs the religious, who are more right on moral issues, to make his government. When Trump became President he has been able to implement his Make America Great Again agenda.  America is still a democracy and also Israel.  Democracy can be more or less right or left but cannot become socialist or communism. For a democracy to become a theocracy where there is no freedom of religion is also an illegal conversion.
