Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi retaliated against US criticism of Beijing’s trade and development model on Tuesday, saying that Beijing has no intention to “play the Game of Thrones on the world stage.” He also warned Washington to respect China’s sovereignty, including on the Hong Kong issue. The Chinese Foreign Minister and State Councilor said that Beijing will not succumb to threats, including on trade. However, he also expressed the hope that a round of high-level trade negotiations next month will produce positive results.

Wang Yi is a Chinese diplomat and politician. He formerly served as China’s Vice Foreign Minister, Ambassador to Japan and Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office. He has served as the Foreign Minister since March 2013 and the State Councilor since March 2018.

During the annual UN General Assembly meeting in New York, Wang Yi called on the two major global economies to leave confrontation and cooperate with each other to benefit both parties and the world. Wang Yi spoke at an event organized by the National Committee on US-China Relations and the US-China Trade National Committee. Wang Yi is expected to speak at the UN General Assembly on Friday.

Earlier on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump sent a tough signal to China and President Xi Jinping. In his speech at the UN General Assembly, Trump said that the United States will no longer continue to tolerate Beijing’s trade practices. He will not accept a bad deal with China in trade. Trump also warned that the world is concerned about how Beijing handles large-scale demonstrations in Hong Kong.

Reuters reported that Trump is seeking to pressure China by increasing tariffs on Chinese products in order to reduce trade barriers. In his speech at the UN General Assembly, he accused China of massively stealing secrets, and said that China has used the WTO rules to its advantage because the WTO gives China a “developing economy” preferential status.

Wang Yi said at the National Committee on US-China Relations that the trade war has caused unnecessary damage to the two countries, raising the cost to American companies, pushing up consumer prices, and weakening the growth potential of the United States. He warned that the United States should not try to force China to change its development model or decouple the two economies, saying that such efforts have no effect.

Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, the first of which is A Game of Thrones.

Wang Yi denied that those who believe that Beijing is seeking to surpass the status of a US strategic power said  “seeking hegemony is not in our DNA, China was a developing country still far behind the United States.” Wang said that “China has no intention to play the Game of Thrones on the world stage. For now and for the foreseeable future, the United States is and will still be the strongest country in the world,” said Wang.

At the same time, Wang Yi said that China and the United States should not interfere in each other’s internal affairs and respect each other’s territorial sovereignty, social system, and development path, and not impose their will and mode on each other. On the Hong Kong issue, Wang Yi said that to maintain Hong Kong’s prosperity, we must oppose violence and abide by the rule of law. “We hope the U.S. will be consistent in its words and actions, respect China’s sovereignty and respect the efforts of Hong Kong . . . government to stop violence and restore order,” Wang said.
