Israel Government Still in Deadlock – No Progress in Forming Unity Government

  • Indictment proceedings of Netanyahu are underway and interfering with progress in making the Unity Government.
  • Avigdor Lieberman presented a raft of legislation requests that interfere with the status quo between religious and secular which was established by Ben Gurion in 1948.
  • Israel medical technology claims to be developing a cure for Insulin-dependent diabetics which will be revealed in the next five years.

President of Israel Reuven Riblin at the 22nd inaugural meeting of the Knesset said that Israeli Democracy is in a state of emergency and a government must be formed as soon as possible. Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein addressed the long period of political uncertainty from April since the 21st Knesset was dissolved without making a government. They both called for a unity government. They said that Israelis will not forgive the leaders of the two major parties if a third election is held within a year.

Netanyahu, Gantz and Rivlin on the way to making unity government.

Indictment proceedings are moving forward against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.  The attorney general Avichai Mandelblit will soon decide whether Netanyahu will enjoy the tranquility of cases being closed or downgraded; or if he will suffer a bribery indictment which would bring an end to his political career and even perhaps land him in prison.

The Yisrael Beitainu party headed by Avigdor Lieberman can make the difference on both sides to make a narrow government of a small majority. He presented a raft of legislation requests regarding religion and state which could draw opposition from religious orthodox parties.

His requests include: lessening restrictions on civil marriages, termination of funding to religious schools which refuse to teach secular subjects as authorized by the Department of Education, leniencies in making conversions, providing public transportation on the Sabbath between cities, increased enlistment of the Orthodox in the Army, and allowing stores to open on the Sabbath in areas which are not primarily religious observant. Each of these suggested bills by Lieberman interfere with the status quo between religious and secular which was established by Ben Gurion in 1948 when the government was established.  It still seems to be impossible for Lieberman to join in with Netanyahu who represents the religious bloc.

Netanyahu blamed Yair Lapid, the number two person in the Blue-White party, who is holding Benny Gantz hostage from making a Unity government with Netanyahu and Likud’s leadership. Lapid is known for his opposition to religion and creates opposition from the religious parties who are aligned with Netanyahu to consider joining a Unity Government.  Lapid wants to be the successor to Gantz in the Unity Government.  Lapid wants to share the Prime Minister position with Gantz which will inevitably cause the government to dissolve and call for new elections.

The Israeli Arabs are protesting a surge of violent crime in their neighborhoods claiming that they need more police protection. At least 71 Arabs have been murdered in this past year which is intolerable. They called a general strike including schools in the Arab sector. They need the Israel government to increase funding in the Arab sector for security and education.

Thousands of Israelis marched in Tel-Aviv reacting to the dangers of global warming and climate change. Many of the protesters are school students who are part of an organization Friday for Future. The movement was created by 16-year old climate activist Greta Thunberg who stopped going to school on Fridays. Instead she organized demonstrations against climate change. She spoke at the United Nations Climate Action Summit condemning world leaders for delaying to take action on Global warming leaving the work over to the next generation.

Israel medical technology claims to be developing a cure for Insulin-dependent diabetics which will be revealed in the next five years. Betalin Therapeutics has developed the first bio-artificial pancreas composed of pig tissue and insulin secreting cells. The artificial pancreas will be implanted into the patient.
