Trump Urges Ukraine, China to Investigate Bidens

  • "China should start an investigation into the Bidens because what happened in China is just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine."
  • Hunter Biden allegedly used an official visit by his father to China to meet business associates.
  • Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) describes the call to China as a breach of the oath of office Trump took when he was inaugurated as President.

US President Donald Trump is in the midst of a political storm and is risking an impeachment because, in a telephone interview, he allegedly called for— and perhaps even tried to pressure— the President of Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son, but that has not caused Donald Trump to abandon the idea. Trump is also now calling on China to investigate the former Vice President and his son, Hunter’s business.

Robert Hunter Biden is an American lawyer and lobbyist who is the second son of former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. He is a partner at Rosemont Seneca Partners, an international consulting firm. Biden served on the board of Burisma Holdings, a major Ukrainian natural gas producer, from 2014 to 2019.

On Thursday, he reiterated that Ukraine should start an investigation, and he added that China should do the same. “China should start an investigation into the Bidens because what happened in China is just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine,” the US president told news reporters gathered on the White House lawn.

The Bidens in China

The story from China is that in 2013, Hunter Biden accompanied his father on an official visit to China and allegedly used the visit to meet business associates, with whom he later set up a finance company. On Thursday, Donald Trump stressed that he has not officially asked China to start an investigation, nor is it something he has discussed with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meetings.

“I have not, but it is certainly something we can start thinking about, because I’m sure that President Xi does not like being on that kind of scrutiny, where billions of dollars is taken out of his country by a guy that just got kicked out of the Navy,” Trump said Thursday of asking China to probe the Bidens. “He got kicked out of the Navy, all of the sudden he’s getting billions of dollars. You know what they call that? They call that a payoff,” the US president added.

Trump’s move is undoubtedly sharpening the conflict with the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives, which must decide whether an impeachment should be brought against Trump. A Democrat and chairman of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), describes the call to China as a breach of the oath of office Trump took when he was inaugurated as President..

The Trump–Ukraine controversy is an ongoing political scandal in the United States. The controversy relates to President Trump and top American administration officials soliciting foreign interference in American elections for Trump’s personal and political benefit. The controversy sparked an impeachment inquiry against Trump for abuse of power.

Member of the Board

What Trump wants to be investigated by China is not as clear-cut as is the case in Ukraine, in which Trump accuses Biden of having a Ukrainian state prosecutor fired to protect his son. In 2014, Hunter Biden became a board member of a Ukrainian natural gas company for a monthly salary of $50,000. Apparently, he had no qualifications that could justify the well-paid job, other than his family connection to one of the world’s most influential men.

As Vice President, Joe Biden was partially responsible for US policy towards Ukraine at that time. Two years later, Joe Biden helped bring down the Ukrainian state prosecutor, along with, among others, the EU and the International Monetary Fund. According to Biden, it was because the state prosecutor stood in the way of a settlement with the corruption in the country.

‘100 percent a scam business’

Trump, in turn, claims that the state prosecutor was on the verge of investigating exactly the company where Hunter Biden sat on the board— and that’s why Joe Biden wanted him fired. “So, I would say that President Zelensky— if it were me, I would recommend that they start an investigation into the Bidens. Because nobody has any doubt that they weren’t crooked. That was a crooked deal— 100 percent He had no knowledge of energy; didn’t know the first thing about it. All of a sudden, he is getting $50,000 a month, plus a lot of other things. Nobody has any doubt,” Trump reiterated on Thursday.
