Planning For a More Balanced Life

  • Planning a more balanced life is not easy and requires thought and action.
  • Busy and stressful lives impact our physical and emotional health. Planning helps us to manage our lives better and consequently to feel better.
  • Understanding our uniqueness helps us to discover a specific life-balance plan that we can design especially to meet our needs, and which can ultimately help us to live better, happier lives.

We all want to live the best and happiest lives that we can and there are a large variety of articles available on how we can do that. In spite of all the information that is available to us and despite our various efforts to try to take a variety of actions to improve the quality of our lives through exercise, health foods and relaxation techniques, many of us still suffer from anxiety and depression and are still taking medications and other substances to help us cope with our lives.

Because so many people today lead such busy, stressful lives, it is important for our physical and mental health and for our happiness that we begin to think about how to plan for and build a more balanced and less stressful life for ourselves.

Work–life balance is the lack of opposition between work and other life roles. It is the state of equilibrium in which demands of personal life, professional life, and family life are equal. Work–life balance consists of, but it is not limited to, flexible work arrangements that allow employees to carry out other life programs and practices. The term ‘work–life balance’ is recent in origin, as it was first used in UK and US in the late 1970s and 1980s, respectively. Work–life balance is a term commonly used to describe the balance that a working individual needs between time allocated for work and other aspects of life. Areas of life other than work–life can include personal interests, family and social or leisure activities. Technological advances have made it possible for work tasks to be accomplished faster due to the use of smartphones, email, video-chat, and other technological software. These technology advances facilitate individuals to work without having a typical ‘9 to 5’ work day.

First, of course, balance requires thought. We have to look at what is really happening in our daily life. If we work that means that we only have a limited amount of time left that we can use for planning. If we live alone and are responsible for home responsibilities, meals and our own health maintenance etc. that leaves even less time. If we are living with a partner, it means we must communicate well with each other to figure out how to share responsibilities–all difficult things to accomplish. Looking after our physical and emotional health also requires that we plan to eat properly and get adequate sleep.

When we have tried to balance all of these responsibilities, then it is important that we must also plan into our lives some relaxation and enjoyment. If we can’t plan something every day or every week we need to plan something every month, but putting relaxation into our plan is essential to our health. We must not try to be the hero or the martyr of our lives. It is also important that we try to get as much help as we can afford. Life is challenging and difficult and the more we understand that, the better we can plan ways to make it easier and live happier, less stressful days.

Each of us is a unique individual. As such, many of us also have perhaps a personal dream that we may want to achieve in the future which we feel will give our lives more lasting satisfaction and more meaning. We need to identify what that is for us and then plan to move steadily forward to fulfill that personal goal.

Following are some of the important components for a balanced life?

When we have identified all of our individual needs and responsibilities and all of the things we want to put into our life to give it balance, than we are ready to plan the weeks and the months of our life so that all of these essential things become part of our balanced life. I use a weekly calendar to help me to balance my life and that does help me to make my life much easier.

When we understand ourselves better, identify our needs and plan them into our lives, our lives become better balanced with less stress and anxiety and with more satisfaction and happiness.
