Erdogan: “We Will Never Declare a Ceasefire” Against Kurds

  • The Turkish president has announced that the country will continue its military operations until the safe zone in northern Syria is established.
  • US Vice President Mike Pence and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held talks with Turkish officials on Wednesday.
  • As part of the US sanctions and pressure on Turkey, the government has accused Turkey's Halkbank of circumventing US sanctions on Iran.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has unequivocally rejected all US calls for an end to military operations in northern Syria. Instead, the Turkish army has continued bombing Syrian border posts. Forces affiliated with the Syrian army are stationed in the border. Despite the US’ calls for a ceasefire, and sanctions on its ministers, President Erdogan has said he will continue his military operations in northern and eastern Syria. Meanwhile, the Syrian army is said to have been entrusted with Russian support.

The 2019 Turkish offensive into north-eastern Syria, code-named by Turkey as Operation Peace Spring, is an ongoing military operation and invasion conducted by the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and the Turkish-allied opposition Syrian National Army (SNA) against areas under the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (NES) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

News sources reported on October 6 that a bomb attack has been launched by Turkish military operations in northern Syria. Erdogan told reporters after his trip to Baku, “they say ‘declare a ceasefire’. We will never declare a ceasefire.” Erdogan also said, “they are pressuring us to stop the operation. They are announcing sanctions. Our goal is clear. We are not worried about any sanctions.”

The Turkish president has announced that the country will continue its military operations until the safe zone in northern Syria is established. It should be noted that the United States on Monday officially announced penalties against some Turkish officials.

Mike Pence’s trip to Turkey

US Vice President Mike Pence and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held talks with Turkish officials on Wednesday, regarding US demand for Turkey to end military operations in northern Syria. Pence is scheduled to meet with Erdogan on Thursday. Turkey’s military operation in northern Syria began three days after a phone call between President Donald Trump and Erdogan. Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from northern Syria following a phone call on October 6. As such, US policy in Syria has changed abruptly after five years of continuity.

News sources report that the withdrawal of US troops from northern Syria will at the same time increase Bashar al-Assad’s power and Russian and Iranian influence in the country. The military presence of the Syrian army in the north is a manifestation of Assad’s growing power in this part of the Syrian territory.

Halk Bankası (“People’s Bank”), or Halkbank, is a large Turkish state-owned bank. Halkbank was a link in the chain to finance Iranian petroleum interests in the wake of U.S.-led nuclear sanctions. In December 2013 Halkbank’s CEO Süleyman Aslan was arrested and charged with taking bribes from, amongst others, Reza Zarrab, an Iranian-Azeri businessman who had taken Turkish citizenship under the name Sarraf

As part of the US sanctions and pressure on Turkey, the government has accused Turkey’s Halkbank of circumventing US sanctions on Iran. In response, a Turkish government official said the US government’s sanctions on Halkbank would not help improve relations between the two countries. It should be noted that US and Turkish officials had begun talks on the Halkbank case last year.
