Does Ukraine Have its Own Assange? Perhaps Russian Meddling?

  • The leak of the information was provided by the Ukrainian Rada elected official Andriy Derkach.
  • One of the main questions is, where is the information coming from?
  • 14 cases have been presented in the portfolio.

On October 9, 2019, the Interfax-Ukraine conference center held a press conference for journalists. The Interfax-Ukraine News Agency is a Kiev-based Ukrainian news agency founded in 1992. The company belongs to the Russian news group Interfax Information Services. The press conference allowed for the release of supposed facts pertaining to the US embassy influence on the Ukrainian law enforcement agencies meddling in the US democratic elections process.

Andriy Derkach is the son of the former director of the Security Service of Ukraine Leonid Derkach and an activist for the Russian Orthodox Church.

The leak of the information was provided by the Ukrainian Rada elected official Andriy Derkach, a politician, scientist, philanthropist, and Member of Ukrainian Parliament. Additionally, the document referenced National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine Leaks. NABU is a Ukrainian law enforcement, anti-corruption agency that prepares cases for prosecution. It has investigatory powers but cannot indict suspects.

Moreover, the information provided had a slow release effect. The spectrum of the information is from US presidential candidate Joe Biden to a former US ambassador to Ukraine Marie L. Yovanovitch.

Julian Paul Assange (3 July 1971) is an Australian editor, publisher and activist who founded WikiLeaks in 2006. WikiLeaks came to international attention in 2010 when it published a series of leaks provided by Chelsea Manning. These leaks included the Collateral Murder video (April 2010), the Afghanistan war logs (July 2010), the Iraq war logs (October 2010), and CableGate (November 2010). After the 2010 leaks, the United States government launched a criminal investigation into WikiLeaks.

One of the main questions is, where is the information coming from? Andriy Derkach claims the information was provided to him by independent journalists who would like to remain anonymous, due to the fear of retaliation.  The materials include actual criminal cases, including the name of the detectives and case numbers. Thus far 14 cases have been presented in the portfolio. It is clear the documents contain information that both Democrats and Republicans in the US can use to their benefit in upcoming 2020 Presidential elections.

The information provided is not a regular case of independent journalist research. However, the trajectory is very similar to Wikileaks and Julian Assange. Hence, there could be a political motivation behind it and it seems to have a pattern of Russian interference and style.

It is quite scary to think that Ukraine could be the major meddling force in the upcoming US Presidential elections.

One of the documents contains communication between the US embassy and NABU. Ironically, NABU was created under a US initiative to combat corruption in the Ukraine and to have transparency.

The slide presented at the conference shows communication between Polina Chyzh (from NABU) and Anna Lemelianova (from the US embassy) supposedly requesting information on Burisma (Hunter Biden was associated with Burisma Holdings Limited). Also there is more information on Nikolay Zlochevsky, who is the owner of Burisma. This is the same company that was mentioned during a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Here are the actual NABU leaks.

The leaks of information provided during the press conference feel like a Ukrainian copycat of Assange. Also, as with Wikileaks, does Russia benefit in all of this?
