How it is played?

It is played between 2 teams of 18 players and its objective is to move the ball downfield and kick the ball between the four tall goal posts. Depending on which posts the ball goes will decide how many points you score. There are several techniques and ways with which the ball can be passed around between teammates and the team that wins will be the team with the higher total score at the end of the match.

The basics of a single match

There are three main umpires who basically oversee all the decisions on the field such as timekeeping, infringements and enforcing the rules. The other two-line judges see if the ball goes out of play while the last two umpires are goal umpires who signal when a goal is scored. Each game in the Australian Football League consists of four 20-minute periods. After each quarter the umpire starts bouncing the ball in the center circle. It is considered as in play and the players can continue their game.

Ground & Equipment

For Australian Football League, an oval-sized pitch with dimensions ranging from 135 to 185 meters, and 110 to 155 meters in length and width simultaneously are usually used. All pitch corners are marked to highlight the area that is out of bounds. At the end of the pitch 4 tall posts, roughly 6 meters in height are kept while the other two front posts are 6.4 meters which are the main scoring area. Football is made from leather and forms an oval shape.

Scoring of the game

A player will be awarded six points if the ball is kicked between the two middle posts and that too without it being ‘touched’ by another player. Additionally, even a behind is scored if the ball is kicked between the inside and outside posts. Other than this one can get scores if the ball hits the two taller posts, or it is carried behind or it is handballed across the goal line by any one player, between any of the posts.

Rules of general play

The techniques of moving the ball are done by a combination of kicking, handballing and running. When running  along with the ball, the player must bounce and catch it at every 15 meters to avoid being penalized, In case the ball is kicked, and it is caught cleanly by a player on the same team he can then take a shot at goal or kick the ball to a teammate in a better position. The handball technique is performed by punching the ball in the desired direction.
