Speak Again

  • At age 7 we definitely know so little about the paralyzing effects of fear.
  • We may all have different experiences with fear, but at the same time it’s okay to deal with it and heal before launching out.
  • Don’t let fear Win.

It was Dr. Maya Angelou who said that at age 7 she believed her voice will kill people. Why would Maya say this? When she was 7, her moms lover raped her (such a painful memory). She was so scared to report or give a name because he said “I will kill anyone you tell”… thankfully Maya’s older brother convinced her to talk. She did and he was arrested but released the next day or so.

Maya Angelou (born April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014) was an American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and acclaim.

However the rapist was killed a few days later after his release. Maya was devastated and in her innocence thought her voice killed a man! So she decided never to SPEAK AGAIN! She went MUTE for 5 whole years never uttering a word to anyone!

At age 7 we definitely know so little about the paralyzing effects of fear. Even as adults certain situations may instill fear in us. We may talk daily but remain mute regarding certain things just like Maya did after the awful experience she had.

But here’s the purpose of this piece, Dr. Maya at some point had to SPEAK AGAIN! She wasn’t going to let the past determine her future. The fear that once gripped her as a 7 year old gave way! It was never an easy journey, it was never a rosy memory! But she refused to be afraid, she refused to let fear win!

Discovering the person of Dr. Maya Angelou has been intriguing. I thought to myself the other day. So what if Maya didn’t ever speak again??? Who would have read a poem for Clinton’s Presidential inauguration ceremony in 1993? Who would have become the first black woman to have a non-fiction bestseller book? Who would have impacted millions of souls with her story?

Dr.Maya became a voice even though she may have never believed she would be one when she was age 7.

We may all have different experiences with fear, but at the same time it’s okay to deal with it and heal before launching out. If Dr. Maya spent 5 complete years without uttering a word then do not beat yourself up too much at the pace at which you are dealing with your “issue”. The most important thing is to reclaim your voice and SPEAK AGAIN after all is said and done!

Fear is always present when certain life issue come at us. Sometimes it is okay to be afraid, but we must refuse to give fear the power to decide our future. Remember Dr. Maya, remember everyone else who believed in themselves. Life is may not be easy but your voice is your weapon.

Don’t let fear Win💕💕♥️To everyone going through painful memories💕💕♥️ I pray you come out stronger🙏🏾.
