Russia announced the final phase of the TOS-2 Heavy Flamethrower System, which is expected to be delivered to the Russian army by May 2020. The TOS is a family of 220mm 30-barrel multiple rocket launchers and thermobaric weapon mounted on a T-72 Main Battle Tank (MBT) chassis. It is based on the Armata platform.
The new system is expected to make its debut at the Moscow Victory Parade on May 9, 2020. The military parade will take place in Red Square in Moscow to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the capitulation of Nazi Germany in 1945. The parade is an annual tradition from the Soviet Era. Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin invited US President Donald Trump to next year’s festivities. Trump has yet to visit Russia since becoming US President. The two US presidents who attended the parade in the past were Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
The TOS system development started during the 1970s and many documents still remain classified. However, the first time the system was shown was in 1998. Putin ordered the use of the system during the Chechen War.
The TOS-2 is going to be an addition to the Buratino (TOS-1) and Solntsepek (TOS-1A) systems. Buratino is the main character of the book The Golden Key, or the Adventures of Buratino by Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy, which is based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi.
The TOS-1A rocket launch system’s chassis are based on the T-72 main battle tank. It retains the same design with the turret being replaced with the rocket launch facility. and the total weight of the launch vehicle is 102,515 lbs.

The effect of TOS missiles corresponds to the effect of an aerosol bomb, but with the difference that a lot of warheads fall into the target, creating an explosive film in the air that must be precisely ignited. An aerosol bomb is a metal receptacle, containing an inert gas under pressure, that sprays an insecticide, disinfectant, or the like when the gas is released by opening a valve. As a result, a huge fireball causing a colossal blast wave is formed. The human target’s internal organs explode and they suffer a horrific death.
The new TOS-2 System will have a range of just over six miles and the vehicle can travel over 300 miles on a single tank of gas. TOS systems have been used during the Syrian conflict and also have been spotted in Saudi Arabia. NATO is concerned with the capabilities of this system and see it as a possible threat.
