Career Planning 

A merchant navy or merchant marine or mercantile marine is the fleet of merchant vessels that are registered in a specific country. On merchant vessels, seafarers of various ranks and sometimes members of maritime trade unions are required by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) to carry Merchant Mariner’s Documents.

There are mainly two profiles for getting a job as a merchant navy officer – Cadet and Engineer. Once you decide you want to get into the navy either as a deck cadet or as an engineer, then it will be easier for you to plan your career. After passing the HSC exam, if you want to join as a deck officer, then you need to pursue a B.Sc in Nautical Science, or you can pursue a diploma in Nautical Science. For becoming a merchant navy engineer, you need to pass a B.tech in Marine Engineering.

Eligibility Criteria 

First of all, you need to pass your class 12th examination in PCM subjects with at least 60% aggregate to be eligible to pursue your career as a merchant navy officer. It is mandatory to be unmarried when you join the merchant navy. Along with these, you should have 6/6 vision in both eyes if you join as a deck cadet, but a minus or plus 2.5 is also allowed. Un-aided or 6/12 vision in each eye if you join as an engineer. But any person who is color blind cannot apply for a job in the merchant navy.

If you want to join merchant navy after B.Sc or B.Tech degree, then you should be within the age limit of 25 to 28 years. You should not be more than 22 years while applying for the merchant navy courses and the minimum age limit of joining is 17 years. Apart from that, you are required to submit your medical certificate that is issued by a doctor to be eligible to apply.

The Admission Process 

Admission to the merchant navy is made based on the entrance examination followed by a written examination and a screening test. The candidates who are shortlisted after the entrance test, are called for a medical test followed by the interview round. After that, you need to complete a ship-training course before starting your career as a merchant navy officer. After that, you will be placed on a ship for 18 months of a long training period. As your training is over, you can appear for the competency that is conducted by the Government of India and join the merchant navy as a third officer. On the contrary, if you want to join as an engineer, then your on-ship training period is for the duration of 6 months, but you also need to crack the competency exam and join as a fourth officer.

Pay Package 

For a merchant navy officer, the pay package can vary based on their rank, city, organization, fare import needs, and other things. However, a merchant navy officer can earn anywhere between 8 lakhs to 20 lakhs in a month.
