The problem of online privacy has become a serious issue in recent years. Many people are not aware that even if they connect to a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service, their internet traffic could still be monitored and traced. While it is quite hard to track your public IP address, you can trace your IP address even when you connect behind a VPN.

What is a VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. When you connect to a VPN server, all your internet traffic is routed through that server. If anyone is spying on your activity on the internet, they won’t be able to see what you’re doing, because it appears as if you are accessing the internet from the VPN server’s IP address rather than your own. Your ISP will also not be able to monitor your activity while you are connected to a VPN.

Firstly, there are some strict laws around the usage of proxies or VPNs etc. These regulations vary from country to country and they can be enforced in many ways. For instance, some countries have actually asked internet service providers (ISPs) to inform their users about the use of a VPN instead of a proxy server. To make sure you are not breaking the law, you need to check your chosen VPN provider’s terms of service.

Secondly, some hidden technologies used in your internet devices can be used to bypass any proxy or VPN. For instance, very popular libraries like jQuery and HTML5 have code in them which allows them to access the IP address without any issues. This means that a person with malicious intent can easily get your IP address without any issues.

And thirdly, you can always test your VPN by choosing a public network in the place you live and check the IP address to verify if it is different from your location. If it is not, then your VPN is working normally.

The easiest way to do this is to use an iPhone or iPad which has a hotspot enabled and then use any of the free hotspot apps available on Google Play or iTunes to create a virtual network with a password that can be used by other devices so that they connect through you’re publicly available hotspot.

3 ways to check if your VPN is working properly

There are a few easy ways to check if your VPN connection is working properly.

Check the IP address of your VPN connection

You can use a number of websites to get the real IP address of your internet connection. Then compare it to what is written on the brochure of your VPN provider. If they match, then you’re safe and you are protected by a proper VPN service. If not, then something might be wrong.

Check if the servers are working properly

If you are using apps like Hidester, the built-in browser traffic will always show the IP address of the VPN server. Therefore, if you have configured your VPN connection and it is not showing up then you should look into it using another browser (for instance Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox) that does not have any browser traffic viewer connected. Then check the IP address of your VPN connection in a different browser; if you don’t see it then something might be wrong with that particular computer or network.

If you are using open and free servers, there is no way to check if those are working properly unless you use other means. The diagram below shows how a VPN server works.

Check if the connection is stable

Before using the VPN connection, make sure that your computer or device is turned on and then connect to it using a reliable browser that does not have any software installed like Tor or any other tool that might work for you. If all of them are working properly then just turn on your VPN connections (if connected) and then try to ping a well-known website from the same computer or device; most likely, the results will show an IP address that does not match your ISP.

So if you’re looking for some easy ways to test your VPN connection, this is a good one to try.

If you aren’t sure about whether or not your VPN is working properly, then try doing some of these simple tests. If they turn out to be successful then I’m sure you’ll be very happy with your VPN service provider. If these tests all fail in any way, then contact your VPN provider for assistance. In an ever connected world, and more importantly, for businesses, VPN’s are an important part of the data safety and privacy of devices and people.
