On Sunday, June 28, 2020, First Baptist Church-Dallas welcomed Vice President Mike Pence as a speaker at its Celebrate Freedom event.  Police-reform-motivated protesting occurred outside of the church. We asked respected advocate Greshun De Bouse her thoughts on Pence’s Dallas visit, to which she responded:

I think people were excited about it, to have an opportunity to be in the same room with the Vice President of the U.S. that is.   It is my understanding this visit was planned at least a year ago, before the global coronavirus pandemic. Interestingly, Pence visited the day Dallas County recorded its highest number of COVID cases, so it was great to learn of his commitment to ensuring Texas has all resources needed to combat COVID-19 as efficaciously as possible.

In his speech at church, Pence stated with some fervor that ‘We’re with you (referring to he and President Trump) We’re going to stay with you.’ In addition, It was interesting to hear how the youth in attendancd perceived Vice President Pence’s Dallas visit.  For example, Ben, a 16-year-old Garland, TX resident who is not a church-goer at all actually came to church to see VP Pence. Been was so overwhelmed with excitement by the visit and speech that all he could say is ‘It was good.’

Though many were receptive to the Pence visit, some like Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa told the Dallas Morning News “Pence doesn’t get it. The best way to get out of a hole is not to keep digging deeper. We need drastic measures and for the administration to show some leadership.”

Advocate Greshun said this when we asked her thoughts on the COVID shift in Dallas County, Texas in general, and response Hinojosa’s comments:

I think as with any problem, the solution resides in identification of the problem source.  Governor Abbott, Dr. Deborah Birx-White House coronavirus response task force coordinator, VP Pence, President Trump, and all other vested parties must first identify why such a rapid spike in COVID cases in Dallas County and Texas in general has occurred to resolve the issue.

All energy should be directed toward increased COVID case source identification and eradication.  Thus, I have no comment on Hinojosa’s commentary. I will say overall, I consider VP Pence’s Dallas visit to have accomplished his desired results of assuring residents the White House stands with the state in the eradication of COVID.

There you have it.  Diplomatic Advocate Greshun De Bouse wants us to focus on eradicating COVID because truth is, if it can become once again this rampant this rapidly in Texas, it can happen anywhere.  Be safe.
