- The Amazon brand items are reasonably priced.
- It is unknown where the Amazon brand products are made.
- Many Amazon brand items are non refundable.
The e-commerce platforms continue to grow. In 2020, online shopping accounted for 13.8% of total retail sales. This year, the online portion of the retail market jumped to 18.4%. Colliers forecasts the number will fall to 16.3% in 2021, and steadily increase, hitting 18.3% again in 2023 and 19.9% by 2025.
Additionally, the Coronavirus pandemic changed the shopping habits of consumers. Amazon positions itself as a one-shop stop. Hence, I decided I needed to refresh my first aid supplies. It is imperative for everyone to have all the necessary supplies at home, especially during the pandemic.
Suggested Items in a First Aid Kit:
- Adhesive tape for joint stabilization
- Elastic bandages to wrap a sprain
- Bandaids in case of accidental laceration
- Antacid in case acid reflux occurs
- Anti-itch cream in case of a rash or an insect bite
- Antihistamines are much needed if allergies strike
- Pain relievers in case of an injury or a headache
- Cold medication is essential to have in case of getting sick
Upon discovering that the calamine lotion due date passed in my medicine cabinet, I have decided to order a replacement on the Amazon marketplace. The Amazon brand of calamine lotion seemed to be reasonably priced.
Since it is not an item that is used a lot, the generic Amazon brand seemed sufficient. The item arrived within two days via Amazon Prime. Ironically enough, the same day, I discovered I had an insect bite and decided to apply the calamine lotion.
However, after opening the calamine lotion, the bottle’s scent was not pleasant and the liquid looked more like water. It was not the same consistency as the calamine lotion I have used in the past.
Upon inspecting the bottle, I also realized that the substance contained parabens, which were not disclosed on the main Amazon listing, but eventually found under the drop down at the bottom.
It should be noted that parabens can act like the hormone estrogen in the body and disrupt the normal function of hormone systems, affecting male and female reproductive system functioning, reproductive development, fertility, and birth outcomes.
Parabens can also interfere with the production of hormones. Amazon also does not offer return or refunds on many Amazon brand products.
Moreover, when looking into it further, I have discovered many negative reviews in relation to the Amazon brand calamine lotion from consumers.
What is even scarier, Amazon believes that consumers do not have a right to know where their goods come from, or what is in them.
Therefore, the ingredients and the lotion could have been made in China with toxic ingredients. Also, how does the consumer know the products are not made in countries that use child labor?
Overall, it is clear when purchasing Amazon brand products you are not guaranteed quality, a refund, or even knowing the origin of the product.
Therefore, it is prudent to purchase products with a transparent label of the source and origin. Perhaps it is best to use alternative marketplaces.
