The owner of a website that was known internationally for exposing the identities of people in countries illegally has re-launched one of his old anti-immigration websites as a resource for documenting the abuse of undocumented persons by law enforcement. This change of heart comes after BrokenBorderPatrol.com founder Cyrus Sullivan spent time living with illegal aliens in federal prisons and realized how unfairly they are treated by the government.
In 2012 Broken Border Patrol launched as a search engine that aggregated statements by social media users indicting that they or someone they knew was an illegal alien. The launch took place shortly after its parent website, Illegal Alien Report, was denounced by members of Congress for allowing concerned citizens to post names and personal information of people they said were illegal aliens or businesses that hired them. News coverage of this denouncement went viral across Latin American news outlets and the site was thriving until the owner went to prison for an unrelated crime.
While in prison one of Sullivan’s cellmates was an undocumented immigrant from Mexico that grew up in American and had more in common with Americans than Mexicans. For him America was his home, that is why he kept coming back, and that was the official reason why he received three years for illegal re-entry. The unofficial reason was to keep him from suing the Seattle Police officer that shot him during a stop that was later ruled illegal. The tactic worked, so he could not find a lawyer to take his case from prison and could not think of a way to legally take the city to court without illegally re-entering the county to go to court.
“Cardenas-Muratalla’s presence in a high crime area at night, looking startled upon seeing the patrol car, and walking away from the doorway while talking on a cell phone do not justify a stop.” – Washington Court of Appeals, 68057-9-1 (2014).

Sullivan was disgusted to see the immigration system being abused so severely and decided that once free he would no longer run websites that out undocumented immigrants. In Sullivan’s opinion nobody deserves to go to prison just for crossing the border. People like Cardenas-Muratalla are victims because the government has an obligation to protect children of all origins from illegal activities including immigration violations by their parents and those children should not be punished for the result of those failures. Sullivan does not want to risk contributing to the mass incarceration of anyone by allowing others to post information that could be used by law enforcement to make arrests, especially now that immigration laws are being enforced.
Sullivan did not know much about immigration when he launched Illegal Alien Report in 2010. He thought that immigration laws were so seldom enforced that all immigration opponents could really do was gripe. To him that made immigration look like a good market for a gripe website. He thought that efforts by the Obama administration would have comprehensively reformed the immigration system by now leaving even more people unable to do anything but gripe about it. Had he thought that immigration laws would be enforced the way they are today he never would have built Illegal Alien Report.
In 2017 Sullivan decided to focus his skills on exposing police misconduct and launched CopBlaster.com where people post complaints about law enforcement. He redirected Illegal Alien Report and Broken Border Patrol to an article denouncing the immigration system before letting the registration for Illegal Alien Report expire the following year while he was serving time for a supervised release violation. This past month he reprogrammed Broken Border Patrol to aggregate stories about ICE and Border Patrol misconduct including all posts on Cop Blaster tagged “immigration” or “border patrol.” He hopes that by doing this Cop Blaster will become a mecca for those dissatisfied with immigration authorities.
