On Tuesday during an annual leadership meeting by the head of the IRGC Intelligence Organization Hossein Taub Soleimani revealed in a rare interview that an assassination attempt had been made on his life. The identities of the suspects has still not been revealed. The assassination was planned for several years. Through the assassination it was hoped that it would spark an internal Iranian power struggle and trigger a religious war within Iran. The suspects who are Iranian were sent abroad and trained to make the attack.
Iran claims that they foiled the assassination attempt which was to take place during the days commemorating Fatimah Bint Mohammed one of the five sons of the prophet usually held in early march. Soleimani purchased a building in the Kerman province of Iran as a memorial in honor of the death of his father who died in 2017 where there was scheduled a memorial service. The suspects arrived in Iran and purchased a building near this site in Southern Iran. They buried 500 KG of explosives in a tunnel under the place where the ceremonies were to be held. Exactly when is still not unknown. They planned to blow up the device during the services.
Soleimani is one of the most important army figures in Iran. He has expanded his military influence throughout the Middle East in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Syria. He began his military career in the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s. He was later involved in extraterritorial operations providing military assistance to Shia and Kurdish fighters in Iraq. In 2012, Soleimani worked to bolster the Syrian government during the Syrian Civil war. He was also influential in the battle against ISIS in Syria. In and about 1997 he was appointed to the position of general of IRGC Quds force. In 2012, he received personal control over Iranian forces in Syria when Iran became deeply concerned about the future of the Assad government. He is widely credited with delivering the strategy in which Assad succeeded to retake cities he had lost to ISIS and the rebels.
Israel and the Arabs are being blamed for this assassination attempt since both Israel and the Arab nations are at war with Iran over control of Yemen and Iran influence in Syria. The publication of foiling this attempt is aimed at bringing attention within Iran to the dangers of their enemies who are Israel, America, and Saudi.
