Atlanta United Host Portland Timbers for MLS Cup Saturday

  • The twenty-third championship of Major League Soccer will be decided Saturday, as heavily-favored Atlanta United host the Portland Timbers for the MLS Cup.
  • In only their second season, Atlanta United have become a surprise MLS attendance leader. The final is expected to be seen by an MLS Cup record crowd, and the league increased away ticket allotments, after the Timbers Army supporters section sold 1,300 tickets in under five minutes.
  • The Five Stripes are led by Venezuelan national, Josef Martinez, who was named the league’s most valuable player on Wednesday. His Golden Boot-winning 34 goals smashed MLS’ single-season goal scoring record.
  • The Timbers’ remarkable run, from fifth-seed to Western Conference champions, is thanks in large part to their midfield. Last year’s MVP, Diego Valeri, is supported by fellow Argentine national, Sebastian Blanco, and Colombian Diego Chara.
  • The match will be broadcast by Fox, which is employing cameras in corner flags, a first for the network. In addition, 26 cameras— sixteen manned, ten unmanned— will cover the action from all angles of Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
