- BSF teaches people the essential truth in the Bible through classes using personal study, discussion group participation, lecture, printed notes.
- All local BSF staff members are volunteers and lay people dedicated to spreading God’s truth through His inspired Word, the bible.
- Jesus is the only way to God and eternal life in Heaven.
Why is attending Church and Bible Study important? Because it pleases God! Hebrews 11:6: “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Without faith/belief in Jesus you are condemned, resulting in eternal damnation. Mark 16:16 “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”
Bible Study Fellowship, BSF is an international Christian, interdenominational, not-for-profit Bible, comprehensive Bible study of lay people. BSF teaches people the essential truth in the Bible through classes using personal study, discussion group participation, lecture, printed notes. BSF changed my life when I was in my mid-forties.
BSF was founded in 1959 by A. Wetherell Johnson, a single, middle-aged, British woman missionary with the “China Inland Mission.” It grew out of a program of structured Bible studies that Ms. Johnson started after she left China. Ms. Johnson later agreed to run a structured Bible study for five California women rather than returning to England in 1952. In 1958, she accepted an invitation to go to San Francisco to conduct Bible classes for the revival converts of Billy Graham‘s evangelical crusades and actually started BSF in 1959.
Upon Johnson’s retirement, Rosemary Jensen became Executive Director (ED) and served for nearly twenty years. In 2000, she began serving as the head of the “Rafiki Foundation International” which has since moved from San Antonio, TX to Eustis, FL. Mrs. Jean Nystrand assumed the position of ED in 2009. Susie Rowan took over as Executive Director and is ED currently.
My life would be totally different without the Bible knowledge learned through Bible Study Fellowship. BSF reinforces God’s message in four ways:
- A daily reading of a small section of the bible book you are studying and answering questions.
- A 45 minute discussion with a small group of peers about the weeks questions you and you’re your piers answered.
- A 30 plus minute large group lecture on the material you read, answered questions on and discussed with your peers.
- Upon leaving you receive 6 pages of inspired notes about the material you read and answered questions on, you discussed with your peers and listened to a great lecture. Your first day’s assignment is to answer questions on the lecture and the notes.
There are separate BSF classes for adult men and women plus coed classes for young single men and women. There is even a class for young children through the women’s program. All local BSF staff members are volunteers and lay people dedicated to spreading God’s truth through His inspired Word, the bible. BSF avoids petty differences in dominations and focuses on Jesus Christ the “Savior of the World.” None of this would be possible without dedicated, God fearing volunteers who deserve thanks and gratitude!
BSF changed my life when I was in my early to mid-forties. For some unknown reason, God began to draw me closer to Him. I began to seek Him and He got me into my first real Bible study. I had just given up drinking alcohol there by the grace of God.
I began to want to know God/Jesus better. Be careful what you wish for as I was soon invited to attend a BSF class. Midway through my first year, I was asked me to be a substitute teaching leader. Had I not just given up drinking alcohol I wouldn’t have been able to teach a class. Now, in addition to doing my weekly readings and questions, I had to attend a leaders meeting every Saturday Morning at 7:00am. I also had to do homiletics on the readings and develop a lesion plan for time and people so all questions would be covered in the allotted time.
I was a substitute teaching leader for over a year and was asked to be a children’s leader for their brand new children’s program including children in grades one through twelve. Now, in addition to attending the leaders meeting on Saturday, I had to also answer the children’s questions by grade level, teach the children a memory verse. Since we missed the adult lecture, we had to stay after the adult lecture so we could hear it on video. Wow, I learned so much more about God/Jesus by teaching then just reading and studying His Word! I was involved for seven years in BSF’s children’s program and my two youngest children were also students during that period of time. Back then BSF only had seven years of study.
After the end of seven years in the children’s program, I left BSF so I could go camping with my youngest son who was working on becoming an Eagle Boys Scout. He was following in the Sayre tradition as I was an Eagle Scout and so was his older brother. I rejoined BSF about six years later.
Joining BSF changed my self-centered life. I was becoming more Christ centered. Studying Scripture made me aware of discrepancies from what I was hearing from the pulpit vs. what I was learning at BSF. I left the Episcopal Church due to a dispute over our Priest’s sermons claiming that Jesus Christ was just one of the ways that someone could be saved. He was quoted saying “we don’t want any of that “one-wayism” around here.”
I volunteered to teach a two year confirmation class. The course syllabus stated that Jesus Christ was not the only way to eternal life, but that Mahatma Gandhi was a good man and God would certainly find a place for him in Heaven.” Although this is a popular belief, it is not what I was learning in my BSF class. In addition, the church was ordaining openly gay priests. Since this was contrary to what he was studying in God’s Word, I left the Episcopal Church in search of a Bible believing church.
Growing up I witnessed the decline of the “Christian Church”. Many people don’t realize that until the mid-1960’s most public schools actually had the Bible read over the intercom every morning along with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Back then, there were “blue laws” preventing shopping on Sunday and families usually spent that day together. He grew up in a small town in Montrose Pennsylvania, where residents never locked their doors. Crime was minimal, divorce and out of wedlock births were the extreme exception.
Taking God and Jesus out everything is Satan’s main goal. Satan wants to take as many souls with him to Hell as possible. Everyone will spend eternity in either Heaven or Hell and eternity is forever.
The Bible says that Jesus is the only way to the father. John 14:6: “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus also said that God must draw or enable you or you will resist Him. John 6:65: “He went on to say, ‘This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.’” I thank that God that He drew me to Him and enabled me to get deeply into His word which changed my life forever. I believe BSF classes can do that better than any other Bible study. All you have to do is, knock and the door will be open, seek and you will find.” BSF is a life saver!
Due to the virus, BSF classes are cancelled; however, class members will receive by mail the remaining weekly notes. New classes will be studying Geneses this fall, God willing. What a great way to start a new life through the book of Geneses! For more information about checkout BSF.
