Joe Biden has chosen Connecticut Commissioner of Education, Dr. Miguel Cardona, as the nation’s next Secretary of Education. Mr. Biden, in making public his next choice for cabinet secretary, stated that Dr. Cardona is an experienced and dedicated public school teacher who will play a pioneering role in the Department of Education.
Mr. Biden also said Dr. Cardona, as Secretary of Education, will tackle injustices in the system. As Commissioner of Education, the 45-year old is on record for having successfully organized for more than 100,000 laptops for students in the spring who had to be taught from home due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr. Biden is banking on him to streamline matters of education in the country should the Senate confirm him to his cabinet. Mr. Biden has spoken out in favor of reopening most schools in the US in the first 100 days of his tenure. New guidelines are to be published for this purpose.
Dr. Cardona, whose parents moved to Connecticut from Puerto Rico, grew up as a child in a social housing estate and attended kindergarten, where he learned English, and then public schools. Dr. Cardona forms a sharp contrast to the incumbent Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, who is critical of public schools, among other things.
Trump Still Fighting On
Meanwhile, as Mr. Biden is busy constructing his government, the outgoing US President isn’t giving up on his battle to overturn the results that gave Joe Biden the win just yet. President Donald Trump on Sunday moved to the Supreme Court with a new lawsuit with which he is trying to contest the election result.
Despite several legal failures, the incumbent US President is trying once again to challenge his defeat in the presidential election in November. President Trump’s campaign team said it had filed a motion with the Supreme Court to contest the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rulings.
“The petition seeks all appropriate remedies, including vacating the appointment of electors committed to Joseph Biden and allowing the Pennsylvania General Assembly to select their replacements,” President Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani, said in a statement.
The Trump camp claims that the court there violated constitutional rights by changing the postal voting rules. As a result, invalid votes were counted in large numbers in the state, they aregue.
Over 50 Lawsuits
President Trump lost the presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden in early November and even the cancellation of the Pennsylvania vote that he is seeking would not change the outcome of the election, owing to Mr. Biden’s big win.
So far, President Trump has refused to admit defeat in the election. He stubbornly claims that he was beaten thanks to massive fraud, which he claims characterized the elections.
Neither President Trump nor his lawyers or supporters have provided any substantiated evidence to support their allegations of election fraud. More than 50 lawsuits from the Trump camp have so far been rejected, two of them before the US Supreme Court.
