The decision to resume the weekly border protests came as Hamas and Palestine Islamic Jihad leaders continued their discussions in Cairo with senior Egyptian intelligence officials about reaching a long term ceasefire with Israel. The Hamas delegation is headed by Ismail Haniyeh, while Islamic Jihad is headed by their secretary general.

On Sunday Lebanon experienced different demonstrations that are the direct opposite of what the nation had been used to in recent days. In the previous days’ demonstrations, the demonstrators graced the streets to oppose the Lebanese government and the country’s political system however; thousands were on the streets today in support of the President of Lebanon, Michel Aoun.
On Saturday while Israelis were celebrating the Sabbath at 9 p.m. sirens were sounded in Southern Israel when ten rockets were shot from Gaza. Most of these rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome Defense system but one rocket managed to get through and damage a house in the settlement city of Sederot. There were no injuries. Israel carried out a series of aerial attacks in response to the rocket attack. Officials in the Gaza strip said that a 27-year old man was killed during an air strike on a military training camp and three other Palestinians were wounded. Hamas threatened to respond on what it called “Israel crimes and aggression against our people.”

Lebanon’s big cities are still rife with hostile protests, despite a move by one of the government’s coalition parties resigning from cabinet. Violent demonstrations in Lebanon against corruption, tax hikes, and cuts to the budget continued on Sunday, reaching the fourth day of the protests.
Protesters demanding political reform in Lebanon have been given an unexpected boost. The head of Lebanese Forces, a Maronite Christian party, Samir Geagea, has asked his ministers to resign from the government. Crowds of demonstrators celebrated the announcement, but are demanding deeper political change. “We are now convinced that the government is unable to take the necessary steps to save the situation,” said Geagea. “Therefore, the bloc decided to ask its ministers to resign from the government.”
Hundreds of people have taken to the streets in Lebanon, in what’s being called the “WhatsApp Revolution.” The trigger for the demonstrations was the announcement of new taxes on, among other things, telephone calls through voice services over the internet. Political parties and the rest of the population reacted immediately. Just over 24 hours of protests have put the Lebanese Government between a rock and a hard place, and have led Prime Minister Saad Hariri to give a 72-hour ultimatum to political parties to resolve the country’s economic crisis.
Lebanon’s Hezbollah guerrilla group said on Monday it had shot down an Israeli drone as it crossed Lebanon’s southern border, a week after a limited exchange of fire. In light of the tense situation in the region, unknown warplanes targeted the positions of Iranian forces and armed militants loyal to them in the far east of Syria on Monday, killing 18 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
There is controversy today over a potential meeting between Hassan Rouhani of Iran and President Donald Trump. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented about this potential meeting saying he cannot tell the American president who he can or cannot meet, but the two are in agreement about the issue of the Iran Nuclear deal. In the meantime Iran will announce nuclear steps on Saturday. They have stated that they are poised for faster nuclear centrifuges which will mean the collapse of the nuclear deal. Europe is still trying to save the deal with a French proposal offering a $15 billion line of credit. Netanyahu is meeting with US secretary of defense Mark Esper and Boris Johnson in London concerning the nuclear deal.
The first confrontation between Hezbollah and Israel ended up without a war. Although Hezbollah said that they do not want a war, by shooting three missiles at military targets in the North and damaging army vehicles there was a risk of a bloodier confrontation. The Israel army vehicles were not manned at the time of the attack. The confrontation ended without war.
Hassan Nasrallah the head of Hezbollah gave Israel advanced warning that he was going to take revenge for the attack by Israel with drones on the city of Beirut and the people of Lebanon, but he emphasized that he was not looking to start a war. Sunday, at 4:00 Israel time Hezbollah shot three anti-tank missiles at an IDF base and several military vehicles near the Israel settlement of Avivim close to the Lebanese border. Hezbollah claims to have destroyed one army vehicle.
