Web Security: Essential Component of Threat-Centric Defense Strategy

Endpoint security and the Web security defenses protecting the endpoint are on the front lines in the battle against malware and targeted attacks attempting to gain access to corporate resources. Web security technologies are adapting to the growing use of cloud services and the explosion of mobile devices, which together have created a perimeter that is becoming more malleable every day. That digital fluidity is under attack by organized criminals in Eastern Europe, Russia, and China who are taking advantage of the growing complexity and strained security defenses.

German Industry, Flagship Businesses in Danger?

In September, Herbert Diess made it clear to the world that under his stewardship, Volkswagen has a new agenda: efficiency at all costs. Unlike its larger rivals, Volkswagen has no need to continue to grow in order to tackle the present-day industry challenges of electrification and self-driving cars. What is needed is concentration of brand identities and an uncluttering of the asset portfolio. This will free up resources to inject into investment. VW alone is spending €80bn to buy batteries and develop the relevant technology.

Russia’s New Generation Sniper Rifle SVCh based on Dragunov Model – Will It Be a Winner?

Next year is the 100 year anniversary of the Evgeniy Dragunov, born February 20, 1920 into the family of the famous weapons makers of Czarist Russia. He served in the Soviet army during World War II. After the war was over, he started designing weapons and by 1950 his first successful design was put into mass production. Dragunov designed five more weapons, which ended up being utilized by the Soviet Army.

The Dragunov sniper rifle gave him international recognition, which the Red Army started using in 1963. He died on the August 4, 1991 and in 1998 was posthumously given one of Russia’s highest honors. In 2011, he was awarded honorary citizen of his hometown of Izhevsk.

The Dragunov Sniper Rifle Specifications:

Model: Snayperskaya Vintovka Dragunova (SVD)

Caliber: 7.62x54mm Rimmed.

Barrel Length: 24″ (610mm)

Twist: 1:10″ RH, 4 Grooves.

Magazine: 10 round detachable box magazine.

Weight: 9.5lb (4.31kg) empty with telescope.

Overall Length: 48.2 in (1225 mm)

Russia has just announced the completion of a new generation Sniper Rifle SVCh based on the Dragunov Sniper Rifle. The JSC Kalashnikov Concern designed the new weapon. The Kalashnikov Concern is named after legendary Mikhail Kolashnikov and its headquarters is located in the city of Izhevsk. Kalashnikov was a Soviet designer, who created the AK-47, officially known as the Avtomat Kalashnikova, a gas-operated, 7.62×39mm assault rifle.

The new Sniper Rifle will be semiautomatic. However, that could be considered as a law, as being semiautomatic can affect precision during use.

Additionally, the design includes structural elements that are installed on a solid upper tire rigidly connected to the barrel. There are three calibers available: 7.62х54R, 7.62х51 (NATO classification .308 Win), and .338 Lapua Magnum. The length of the SVCH is 995 to 1,015 mm. The barrel is identical to SVD and holds 10 bullets. There are advanced versions of the barrel able to hold 15 or 20 bullets and the weight is 4,2 kg, hence it is lighter than the SVD.  The prototype was completed in 2018 and Russian President Vladimir Putin was seen showcasing the weapon himself.

The rifle has Picatinny rail (also known as a MIL-STD-1913 rail or STANAG 2324 rail), a military standard rail interface system that provides a mounting platform for firearm accessories. It was originally used for mounting scopes atop the receivers of larger caliber rifles. Once established, its use expanded to also attach other accessories such as: iron sights, tactical lights, laser aiming modules, night vision devices, reflex sights, foregrips, bipods, slings and bayonets.

Thus far, the Rifle has not been tested in combat zones. Russia plans to have SVCH in production by 2021 and the Russian military will be supplied with the new weapon by the end of 2021 replacing the SVD. The results of its capabilities remain to be seen.

Russia to Debut Menacing TOS-2 Heavy Flamethrower Defense System

Russia announced the final phase of the TOS-2 Heavy Flamethrower System, which is expected to be delivered to the Russian army by May 2020. The TOS is a family of 220mm 30-barrel multiple rocket launchers and thermobaric weapon mounted on a T-72 Main Battle Tank (MBT) chassis. It is based on the Armata platform.

The new system is expected to make its debut at the Moscow Victory Parade on May 9, 2020. The military parade will take place in Red Square in Moscow to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the capitulation of Nazi Germany in 1945. The parade is an annual tradition from the Soviet Era. Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin invited US President Donald Trump to next year’s festivities.  Trump has yet to visit Russia since becoming US President. The two US presidents who attended the parade in the past were Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

The TOS system development started during the 1970s and many documents still remain classified. However, the first time the system was shown was in 1998. Putin ordered the use of the system during the Chechen War.

The TOS-2 is going to be an addition to the Buratino (TOS-1) and Solntsepek (TOS-1A) systems. Buratino is the main character of the book The Golden Key, or the Adventures of Buratino by Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy, which is based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi.

The TOS-1A rocket launch system’s chassis are based on the T-72 main battle tank. It retains the same design with the turret being replaced with the rocket launch facility. and the total weight of the launch vehicle is 102,515 lbs.

The effect of TOS missiles corresponds to the effect of an aerosol bomb, but with the difference that a lot of warheads fall into the target, creating an explosive film in the air that must be precisely ignited. An aerosol bomb is a metal receptacle, containing an inert gas under pressure, that sprays an insecticide, disinfectant, or the like when the gas is released by opening a valve. As a result, a huge fireball causing a colossal blast wave is formed. The human target’s internal organs explode and they suffer a horrific death.

The new TOS-2 System will have  a range of just over six miles and the vehicle can travel over 300 miles on a single tank of gas. TOS systems have been used during the Syrian conflict and also have been spotted in Saudi Arabia. NATO is concerned with the capabilities of this system and see it as a possible threat.
