Census Continues to Provide Promising News for U.S. Wholesalers

Getting in one last bit of work before the long weekend, the US Census Bureau released its Monthly Advance Economic Indicators Report for October on the day before Thanksgiving.  Advance wholesale inventories were up for the month of October, by 0.9%.  The August to September percentage change was revised from up, 0.4% to up 0.7%.

End of the month wholesale inventories for October, adjusted for seasonal variations but not for price changes, were estimated at $646.2 billion.  That’s compared to a September figure of $640.4 billion.  Year to date, however, that number is down 2.7% when compared to the end of October 2019.

It’s worth remembering that inventories are a key component of gross domestic product changes.  High inventory usually indicates a surplus of unsold goods and could point to an economic slowdown.  By contrast, low inventory usually indicates stronger economic growth, and demonstrates high demand with products flying off the shelves.

It doesn’t tell the whole story, however, particularly this year.  The coronavirus pandemic, and the Great Lockdown employed to mitigate it, have provided a shock to the global business climate not seen in recent memory.  Supply chains have been slowed down or disconnected, and supply and demand have oftentimes struggled to keep up with one another.
