CES 2020: New Blueprints for Future Mobility

  • Japanese technology giant Sony Corporation exhibited its first pure electric concept model at the exhibition.
  • Mercedes-Benz released the concept of vehicle VISION AVTR, whose core concept is the sustainable use of resources.
  • Ford showed innovative connectable technology for Mustang Mach-E models.

The 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) opened on the 7th in Las Vegas. The latest artificial intelligence and 5G technology are increasingly integrated with car companies, and many new products, and cutting-edge travel solutions, have appeared on the show. Many companies, including traditional car companies and well-known electronics manufacturers, have released eye-catching new products at this exhibition, depicting the increasingly intelligent, safe and clean industrial development direction.

CES (formerly an acronym for Consumer Electronics Show) is an annual trade show organized by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). Held in January at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States, the event typically hosts presentations of new products and technologies in the consumer electronics industry.

Japanese technology giant Sony Corporation exhibited its first pure electric concept model at the exhibition. At the same time, Sony CEO Yoshida Kenichiro also announced that Sony officially entered the electric vehicle technology field. This electric vehicle, called Vision-S, brings together many of today’s cutting-edge technologies, including 33 sensors, multiple widescreen displays, 360-degree audio, lidar, and cameras.

According to reports, Vision-S was created by Sony in collaboration with leaders in various industries, some of which are from manufacturers such as BlackBerry and Bosch. In addition, the Vision-S interior instrument panel uses an integrated screen, which not only clearly displays driving information, but also enables entertainment activities. “I believe that the development of mobility will also redefine the car as a new entertainment space,” said Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida.

According to Sony, this concept combines many technologies, such as Sony imaging and sensing, AI, communication and cloud. Due to the existence of a large number of sensors, the perception of this car even exceeds the human eye. In the era of smart cars, such a car technology will bring a more secure and convenient experience.

At this year’s CES exhibition, Mercedes-Benz released the concept of vehicle VISION AVTR, whose core concept is the sustainable use of resources. Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group has successively released several jeep vehicles with plug-in hybrid versions. BMW also showed the latest i3 concept car. Ford showed innovative connectable technology for Mustang Mach-E models. GM will integrate Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant service.

At this exhibition, car companies have thrown out new products of the “brain hole” style. The most eye-catching is a concept car that integrates cutting-edge technology and future mobility solutions. Hyundai Motor Group has proposed three types of mobile travel solutions: urban air travel, personalized custom models, and a central hub that integrates transportation and community activities.

Sony Corporation is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation headquartered in Kōnan, Minato, Tokyo. In January 2020 Sony unveiled a concept electric car at the Consumer Electronics Show, named Vision-S, designed in collaboration with components manufacturer Magna International.

At the same time, Hyundai Motors released the PAV (“Personal Aircraft”) concept car, which was named “e-A1”, with a pair of wings and four propellers. It is mainly dedicated to solving congestion and public facilities in future big cities. Hyundai Motor hopes to take advantage of the mobility in the air to greatly reduce the transportation time, and to bring passengers a comfortable and safe driving environment by combining the aerodynamics of the vehicle and the interior cabin design.

Because personal aircraft can take off and land vertically, it brings a way of urban air travel without a runway. Air travel is also considered by Hyundai Motor as an important innovative business in the future, which can help solve the problems faced by major cities such as traffic congestion and change the way people travel. “We have seen the dawn of the new era, and people’s travel will move towards the sky above the city. Urban air travel will solve the problem of traffic congestion. Let people spend precious time on things they care about and love.”

In addition, Japan’s Toyota Motor announced during the exhibition that it plans to build a prototype of a “future city” at the foot of Mount Fuji to enter a broader industrial layout with a behavioral cut. The city will be powered by hydrogen energy batteries and will become a testing ground for technologies such as self-driving cars, “smart homes,” and artificial intelligence. Toyota did not disclose the exact cost of the project. Construction of the project is scheduled to begin next year, and several executives said they have conducted a large-scale investigation and budgeted.
