College Basketball Season Tips Off This Week

  • College basketball begins its nearly 200-day long marathon season this week, with its earliest-ever start.  The idea is to create more buzz for the beginning of the season, which usually tips off around Thanksgiving.  Not everyone is thrilled about that, however, especially the coaches.
  • A trio of Duke Blue Devils— R.J. Barrett, Zion Williamson, and Cameron Reddish— highlight a class of players many fans will be enjoying this season, but only for one year.  They’ll be going 1, 2, and 4 in next year’s NBA Draft.  Changes to the NBA’s infamous “one and done” rule are on the horizon, but, for the moment, the college game will still be dominated by talented freshmen.
  • Duke may look unstoppable, but if you’re looking to get an early start on your March Madness pool, here are five under-the-radar teams which might make a surprise Tournament run.  One of them, the Nevada Wolfpack, return the core of their 29-8, Sweet 16 team, and could be a national title contender.
  • The most turbulent off-season in recent memory may be in the rear-view mirror, but the NCAA’s investigation of the Adidas hoops scandal is only beginning.  According to multiple sources, the federal government gave the NCAA the go-ahead to begin what could be the most important, broadest investigation in its history.
