Coronavirus: Italy Surpasses China, China Reports No Local Cases

  • Italy has ordered the army to remove bodies from a city in the north of the country that is at the center of the coronavirus outbreak.
  • China announced on Thursday that in the past 24 hours it had not registered any new cases of Covid-19.
  • Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he believes it is possible to lift the current restrictions related to the pandemic of coronavirus Covid-19 within 12 weeks.

According to the Italian authorities, Italy has so far registered 3,405 deaths from the new coronavirusThe number of deaths caused by the new coronavirus in Italy surpassed China on Thursday, where the outbreak began. In China— considering the whole country— the total number of victims is 3,245.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), also known as 2019-nCoV acute respiratory disease (2019-nCoV ARD), and novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) is a viral respiratory disease caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). It was first detected during the 2019–20 Wuhan coronavirus outbreak.

Still, according to Italian authorities, the country recorded 427 deaths in just one day. It is slightly less than the 475 victims recorded the day before. In total cases of the disease, Italy has 41,035, an increase of 14.9% in just one day.

To contain the spread of the new coronavirus, the Italian government has imposed restrictions on movements across the country. Italians should not leave their homes, except in cases of extreme necessity.

Army Removes Bodies

Italy has ordered the army to remove bodies from a city in the north of the country that is at the center of the coronavirus outbreak. The local cemetery in Bergamo, northeast of Milan, has been overwhelmed by the scale of the Coronavirus outbreak. The government in Rome is prepared to prolong emergency lockdown measures across Italy.

Videos taken by residents of Bergamo, and displayed on the website of the local newspaper, “Eco di Bergamo,” showed a long line of military trucks crossing the roads at dawn and removing coffins from a city cemetery. An army spokesman confirmed on Thursday that 15 trucks and 50 soldiers had been mobilized to transfer bodies to neighboring provinces. Earlier, Bergamo officials had asked for help with cremations because of the overload on their crematorium.

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson is a British politician, writer, and former journalist serving as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party since 2019. He was Foreign Secretary from 2016 to 2018 and Mayor of London from 2008 to 2016.

China Without Local Transmission

China announced on Thursday that in the past 24 hours it had not registered any new cases of Covid-19, but verified 34 cases of infected people who came from abroad. This is the first day without local cases of contamination since local authorities defined the counting criteria in January.

UK Death Toll Rises to 144

The number of deaths from the Covid-19 coronavirus has risen to 144 in the UK, according to the daily balance sheet published today by the nation’s Ministry of Health. The data also indicates that, by 9 AM today, 3,229 cases had been identified among 64,581 people tested. 

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he believes it is possible to lift the current restrictions related to the pandemic of coronavirus Covid-19 within 12 weeks, but reiterated the Brits continue to follow the advice of social distancing.

I’m conscious as the days have gone by that people will want to know how long we’re expecting them to keep it up.

I think, looking at it all, that we can turn the tide within the next 12 weeks and I’m absolutely confident that we can send coronavirus packing in this country.

But only if we all take the steps that we’ve outlined, that is vital, that’s how we’re going to reduce the peak and once we’ve achieved that and I think that we will, if we take the steps I’ve said, then the scientific progress that we’ve been making will really start coming into play.

He held a daily press conference on the situation today at 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the head of government.
