Coronavirus — New Record in India, Treatments Hopeful

  • The total death toll from the epidemic in the country has risen to 18,213.

India recorded 20,903 new cases in a single day yesterday, which is the highest number of cases reported in a single day in the country so far. With this, the total number of infected people in India has reached 62,5544. According to the Ministry of Health, there are currently 220,439 active cases in the country.

The first case of the COVID-19 pandemic in India was reported on 30 January 2020, originating from China. As of 3 July 2020, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has confirmed a total of 625,544 cases, 379,891 recoveries (including 1 migration) and 18,213 deaths in the country.

The total death toll from the epidemic in the country has risen to 18,213, including 379 deaths in the last 24 hours. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, 241,576 samples have been tested in the country in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of tests in the country to 9,297,749.

The American pharma company Gilead will produce as much as Remdesivir for the treatment of COVID-19 for the next three months. The US has already agreed to buy almost all the quantity. However, some pharmaceutical companies in India, Pakistan, and Egypt are licensed to produce generic versions of Remdesivir.

Research so far has shown that patients are recovering faster with the use of Remdisivir. However, it is not clear to what extent this drug increases the chances of an infected person surviving.

Gujarat: 681 new cases, 19 deaths in 24 Hours

According to the Gujarat Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 681 new cases of coronavirus infection have been reported in the last 24 hours. At the same time, 19 of the infected people in the state have died. A total of 563 people have been discharged after treatment in various cities and districts of the state.

The highest number of coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours has been reported in Ahmedabad, with 202 cases. After this, 191 cases have been reported in Surat city, while 36 cases have been reported in other districts. Besides, 46 cases have also been reported in Vadodara city.

“We got hit very badly, worse than any country, in regards to the number of cases and the number of deaths,” he told BBC Radio 4 on Thursday. “The problem we’re facing now is, in an attempt to so-called reopen or open the government and get it back to some form of normality, we’re seeing very disturbing spikes in different individual states in the United States, particularly, most recently, Florida, Arizona, Texas and California, some of which are really big states with high populations,” he said.

Vaccine Trials at Oxford University Raise Hopes

During a parliamentary hearing in Britain, a government committee said a trial of a possible COVID-19 vaccine at Oxford University had yielded positive results. The trial has now reached the third stage of the clinical stage.

Sarah Gilbert, a professor of vaccinology at the university, told the government committee that 8,000 volunteers had been registered for the next phase of the trial. However, it is not yet known when the vaccine will be ready. The future of this vaccine will depend on the results of the trial.
