Coronavirus — Rouhani Says 25 Million Iranians Infected

  • “Our estimate is that until now 25 million Iranians have been infected with this virus and about 14,000 have lost their dear lives,” Rouhani said in the speech.
  • Rouhani also announced that more than 200,000 coronavirus patients had been hospitalized during the period.
  • Rouhani cited Qom and Gilan as the foci of the spread of coronavirus disease in Iran, and said the outbreak was caused by the return of passengers from Wuhan, China.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Saturday that as many as 25 million Iranians could have been infected with the coronavirus. Rouhani made his remarks at a meeting of the National Anti-Coronavirus Headquarters, and was reported by the semi-official Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA).

On 19 February 2020, Iran reported its first confirmed cases of infections in Qom. As of July 18, there were 271,606 reported cases and 13,979 deaths. Both are rumored to be substantially higher.

“Our estimate is that until now 25 million Iranians have been infected with this virus and about 14,000 have lost their dear lives,” Rouhani said in the speech. “There is the possibility that between 30 and 35 million other people will be at risk.”

“We must join hands and break the chain of transmission to continue the process of social and economic activities of the people,” the Iranian president said, noting that there is no collective safety or vaccine to treat and prevent the disease.

Rouhani said that according to a report submitted to him by the Ministry of Health, about 25 million Iranians have been infected with the Coronavirus over the past 150 days.

200,000 People were Hospitalized

Rouhani also announced that more than 200,000 coronavirus patients had been hospitalized during the period. He put death numbers of COVID-19 disease at about 14,000. The Iranian president also announced that another 30 to 35 million Iranians could be infected with the Coronavirus.

Rouhani said that if the report were correct, the number of patients to be admitted to hospitals would be “twice the current number of 200,000.” He added, “according to this report, five hundred people do not notice the infection, about 350 people have mild symptoms, and 150 people may need to be hospitalized. So we probably have a few million more people to be hospitalized.”

Hassan Rouhani is the seventh and current President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He has been a member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts since 1999, and was Chief Nuclear Negotiator from 2003 to 2005. He was re-elected President in 2017.

Rouhani cited Qom and Gilan as the foci of the spread of coronavirus disease in Iran, and said the outbreak was caused by the return of passengers from Wuhan, China. President Rouhani again referred to the general strategies to deal with the coronavirus outbreak, and called on the people to follow the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, and use masks in public assemblies.

He also demanded all people to stop attending rallies. It should be noted that protest rallies have recently taken place in Behban and several other cities. Rouhani claimed that in order to fight the coronavirus, the production of sanitary ware in Iran is well done and from this perspective, Iran needs little from other countries.

At the same time, he called for support for workers in the production of goods needed by the people. According to him, 15 million people work in this production sector, which brings the total number of family members to 50 million.

If the statistics provided by Hassan Rouhani are correct, and another 35 million people are infected with the coronavirus, the number of infected people in Iran will reach 60 million. This is three-quarters of the total population of the country.
