Coronavirus: UK Health Minister Tests Positive, NY Quarantines, Qatar Bans Travel

  • Travel and public gatherings have both been banned in Italy.
  • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared an area north of the city a "containment zone."
  • Qatar has temporarily banned the entry of people from 14 countries.

Britain’s Deputy Health Minister Nadine Dorries said that she has tested positive for coronavirus. By issuing a statement, she has said that as soon as she was told about it, she has taken all the precautions and separated herself from her house. Dorries thanked the Health Department for informing her of the infection on time.

Nadine Dorries is a British Conservative politician serving as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health and Social Care since 2019, and has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Bedfordshire since 2005. On 10 March 2020 she became the first MP to test positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19).

“Public Health England (PHE) has started detailed contact tracing and the department and my parliamentary office are closely following their advice,” she said. So far, six people have died due to Coronavirus in Britain. Some 26,000 people have been screened for infection, out of which 373 people tested positive.

Italy Quarantines Itself from the World

More than 10,000 cases of coronavirus have been reported in Italy, with 631 deaths. Travel and public gatherings have both been banned in the country. Airlines around the world have currently stopped thousands of airlines coming from Italy. Moreover, after receiving the news of the transition of one member, the WTO has canceled all its meetings until March 20th.

European Commission Creates Coronavirus Fund

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that the rapid spread of the coronavirus in Europe is a serious crisis and it needs to take big steps to stop it. After talks with EU leaders over video conferencing, he said that all precautionary measures will be taken to ensure that the region does not face an economic crisis.

Ursula von der Leyen is a German politician and the President of the European Commission since 1 December 2019. She served in the federal government of Germany from 2005 to 2019 as the longest-serving member of Angela Merkel’s cabinet.

At the same time, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said that a fund of $25 billion will be created to fight this crisis. Meanwhile, Slovenia and Austria criticized the decision to impose strict restrictions on passengers in Italy, Europe’s most affected country due to the Coronavirus.

United States Containment

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that an area north of the city has been declared a “containment zone.” He said that schools and churches would be closed for two weeks to prevent the spread of coronavirus in New Rochelle, Westchester County. Cuomo has also deployed the national guard in New Rochelle to keep an eye on the situation and to help doctors. New Rochelle now hosts the largest cluster of cases in the United States.

At the same time, Walmart is implementing an emergency leave policy after an employee of Kentucky was found infected with coronavirus. The company, one of the largest retail companies in the United States, has said that sick employees can stay at home until the end of April, and their wages will not be cut.

Qatar Temporarily Bans Entry from 14 Countries

Qatar seems to be very concerned about the coronavirus, and announced Sunday it has temporarily banned the entry of people from 14 countries. The ban will apply to Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Syria and Thailand.
