The United States is scheduled to test a possible coronavirus vaccine with 45 volunteers. The trial of the coronavirus vaccine on 45 healthy, young volunteers will be carried out in Seattle, Washington on Monday, as reported by news sources. This trial is funded by the US government, and volunteers will receive various doses of the vaccine without being infected. The vaccine itself does not contain part of the actual coronavirus.
The vaccine “instructs the body’s own cellular mechanisms for making proteins to make those that mimic the virus proteins, thereby producing an immune response.” In the first phase, the trial will see whether the dose produces an immune response. The experimental vaccine was called mRNA-1273, and was made by Moderna. This trial took place at the Kaiser Permanente Health Research Institute in Seattle.
Meanwhile, the owner of the Louis Vuitton brand, LVMH, will mobilize a perfume manufacturing division to make hand disinfectant gel, or hand sanitizer, to protect the public from the coronavirus outbreak. The luxury goods manufacturer said it wanted to help overcome the shortage of germicidal products that hit France.
“LVMH will use the production lines of its perfume and cosmetic brands . . . to produce large quantities of hydroalcoholic gels from Monday,” LVMH said in a statement. “These gels will be delivered free of charge to the health authorities,” LVMH added.
The LVMH perfume and cosmetics manufacturer division actually produces goods for brands such as Christian Dior and Givenchy. The French conglomerate also has well-known brands, such as champagne drink maker Moet & Chandon, watchmaker Tag Heuer, and jewelry maker Bulgari.
Europe Now Epicenter of Pandemic
The vaccine trial plan took place when three countries in Europe recorded the highest number of deaths in a day due to the coronavirus. In Italy there were 368 deaths in one day. The total number of deaths in Italy reached 1,809 people. Spain recorded 97 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 288. France reported 29 deaths, with a total of 120 people.
Britain also recorded 14 people who died, with a total of 35 people. Europe is now the center of the coronavirus pandemic, said the head of the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus appealed for more aggressive efforts, community mobilization, and social restrictions to save more lives. “Don’t let this fire continue to burn,” he said.
Spain, the worst affected European country after Italy, reported a surge in infected numbers. Some 4,231 people are infected. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said a state of emergency will be valid from Saturday for the next two weeks. Restrictions on the border regions in Europe began to be imposed in order to restrain the spread of the plague.
132,500 Cases, 5,000 Dead
More than 132,500 people have been diagnosed positive for Covid-19 in 123 countries around the world, according to WHO data. The fatality rate has reached more than 5,000— a number Dr. Tedros calls “the pandemic stage”.
“Europe has now become the center of a pandemic, with numbers of cases and deaths surpassing numbers outside Europe other than China,” he said. More cases are now being reported every day, higher than the number in China at the height of the epidemic.
