2 Chronicles Chapter 7; King James Holy Bible:
13. “If I shut up heaven that there be no rain,
or if I command the locusts to devour the land,
or if I send pestilence among my people;”
14. “If my people, which are called by my name,
shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my
face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I
hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will
heal their land.”
Revelation 6:8 – “And I looked, and behold a pale
horse: and his name that sat on him was Death,
and Hell followed with him. And power was given
unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill
with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and
with the beasts of the earth.”
In Luke chapter 21, Jesus speaks prophetically about the signs that would precede the end of the world. In Luke 21:11, Jesus says that one of
those signs would be pestilences, “And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.” [The meaning of a pestilence, according to the Hebrew and Greek definitions, is a plague or disease.]
Additionally, in Matthew 24:7-8 Jesus says, “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes. But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.” In several versions of the Bible the word “pestilences” appears between famines and earthquakes.
In the prophetic Bible verses above, Jesus was referring to a baby’s birth. He was explaining that just as a woman’s contractions or labor pains get more frequent and more severe as a child nears birth, so these events or “signs” will also become more frequent and more severe as the world nears the second coming of Jesus.
Is the coronavirus a sign of the end? No, it is a sign. One of many signs still yet to come. As we take a look at the frequency of events mentioned here, looking at the statistics gives us a view of an increased frequency.
Throughout history many plagues and diseases have caused fear and death. For example, consider the following outbreaks:
- The Black Death
Jesus didn’t come back in the past because of these plagues. However, as epidemics including the coronavirus occur more often and become more deadly, we should pay attention as these are prophetic signs that Jesus is coming back soon.
The point Jesus is trying to get across in Luke 21and Matthew 24 is to watch for prophetic signs to increase in number. And they certainly are. This increase will signal an imminent coming of Christ.
Here is a list of past pandemics, notice the increase in frequency.
The shortest gap between pandemics is 3 years; the longest is 56 years.
Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus.
The National Earthquake Information Center now locates about 20,000 earthquakes each year, or approximately 55 per day. As a result of the improvements in communications and the increased interest in natural disasters, the public now learns about earthquakes more quickly than ever before.
According to records, since about 1900, we expect about 16 major earthquakes in any given year, which includes 15 earthquakes in the magnitude 7 range and one earthquake magnitude 8.0 or greater. In the past 44 years, from 1973 through 2017, our records show that we have exceeded the long-term average number of major earthquakes only 11 times, in 1976, 1990, 1995, 1999, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016.
The year with the largest total was 2010, with 24 earthquakes greater than or equal to magnitude 7.0. In other years the total was well below the 16 per year expected based on the long-term average: 1989 only saw 6, while 1988 saw only 7 major earthquakes.
16,975 earthquakes in 2016 with more than 242,000 dead.
In 2015, there were 19 earthquakes worldwide with a magnitude of 7.0 or higher. Since about 1900, the average has been about 18 earthquakes per year.Earthquakes caused 9,612 deaths worldwide in 2015, a significant increase compared to 664 deaths in 2014.
The statistic shows the numbers of earthquakes worldwide from 2000 to 2019. In 2019, a total of 1,637 earthquakes with magnitude of five or more were recorded worldwide.
Famines: Increasing in number.
64 from 1900 to present time.
50 during the 1800’s.
28 during the 1700’s.
27 during the 1600’s.
Global catastrophes have also increased over the last few generations.
