El Chapo’s Sons Hide in Mountains Following Inter-Gang Wars

  • There is infighting within the Sinaloa Cartel.
  • El Chapo’s sons are reportedly fighting El Mayo.
  • His sons are hiding out in the mountains in Durango.

Since the extradition of dug lord Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, the Sinaloa Carrel has been led by Ismael Zambada García, also known as El Mayo, as well as El Chapo’s sons, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, Ivan Arhcivlado, and Jesus Alfredo Guzman. His sons are evidently more violent than their father.

Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada is a Mexican suspected drug lord and leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, an international crime syndicate based in Sinaloa state, Mexico.

El Chapo preferred using diplomacy, alliances, and bribery to maintain hegemony and keep rivals at bay. According to the latest reports, shooters aligned to his sons, who are collectively known as Los Chapitos, have attacked sicario units that work for El Mayo.

The violence has led to the death of over a dozen men in the past few days. Most of them are allied to El Mayo’s group. The new development marks a watershed moment in cartel relations in the state of Sinaloa, the Sinaloa Cartel’s stronghold.

A spit could mean a weaker narco-trafficking organization that will struggle to effectively fight rival cartels, such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho.

El Chapo’s sons and their hitmen are said to be hiding out in the Mexican state of Durango. The region is a major producer of opium poppy, which is used in the production of illegal drugs such as heroin. The area, which is referred to as the “Golden Triangle,” is situated between the states of Chihuahua, Sinaloa, and Durango.

Local media reports indicate that the Sinaloa cartel gunmen have taken control of the zone in Durango, making it a new stronghold and hideaway for the gang’s leaders. It is rumored that El Chapo’s sons roam freely, and walk the streets flanked by armed bodyguards. The authorities here can do little about it.

The Sinaloa Cartel, also known as the Guzmán-Loera Organization, the Pacific Cartel, the Federation, and the Blood Alliance, is an international drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime syndicate established during the late 1980s. The cartel is primarily based in the city of Culiacán, Sinaloa, with operations in the Mexican states of Baja California, Durango, Sonora, and Chihuahua.

Hundreds of men belonging to the Los Cabrera, apparently provide security for the brothers. The group is the armed wing of the Sinaloa Cartel. It is led by Jose Luis Cabrera Sarabia. The unit is apparently involved in other activities, such as drug trafficking and carrying out assassination orders issued by the brothers.

Its former leader, Jose Luis’ brother, Felipe Cabrera Sarabia, also known as The Engineer, is behind bars in the United States following extradition.

El Chapo’s sons are a fiercely loyal bunch. Their resolve to protect one of their own was demonstrated in October last year, after Ovidio Guzman, one of the brothers, was captured by Mexican authorities. His brothers sent hundreds of cartel hitmen to surround the arresting authorities.

The overwhelmed security forces were eventually forced to release the drug kingpin. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recently admitted to calling off the operation, and asking the security forces to release Guzman. Going by his statement, his release was necessary to save lives.
