At least one person is in critical condition, while 20 people have been arrested after thousands of Trump supporters gathered in the US capital, Washington DC, on Saturday. The thousands of Trump supporters had turned up to show their solidarity with their presidential candidate.

This is according to the authorities, as reported by the NBC News’ local branch. President Trump has all along insisted that the country’s recently-held presidential election, which saw Democratic candidate Joe Biden declared the winner, was fraudulent.

“It doesn’t add up. If he lost, then we need to say ‘OK, he lost.’ But this is not the process I fought for,” said Charmion Prince, 48, an army veteran from Tennessee. “I want this nightmare to end,” he told the Guardian. “I haven’t slept much since the election because I’m sad that Donald Trump is not our president. He’s gonna be our president though.”

The organizers had named the protest the “Million MAGA March,” but according to The Guardian, those present were merely in their thousands. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany wrote on Twitter that millions had turned up, an allegation which, according to the media, was “greatly exaggerated,” and which has not been confirmed by the authorities.

Fights Broke Out

Trump supporters were met by groups of counter-protesters in several places during the day. According to NBC News, fighting broke out between the groups in several places in the capital in the evening.

According to NBC News, people from the right-wing militia group Proud Boys were involved in several of the fights. Among other things, they clashed with supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement. President Trump also commented on Twitter on the demonstration and the violent clashes.

He accused sympathizers of the left-wing radical movement Antifa of provoking the clashes after dark, in which members, according to Trump, went after elderly people and families in the demonstration. The president’s claims have not been confirmed by any authorities.

A spokesman for the fire department in Washington, DC reports that, according to NBC News, that a person was stabbed Saturday night local time when a fight broke out between two major groups. The person was subsequently taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Officials in the fire department informed, according to NBC News, fighting the fight was connected to Saturday’s protests. The mayor’s office in Washington DC says 20 people have been arrested since the protests began Saturday noon local time.

Two police officers have also been injured. The extent of their injuries is unknown. On Saturday night, battle-dressed police had to move out to several fights in connection with the protests. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Saturday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck.

News reporting is my thing. My view of what is happening in our world is colored by my love of history and how the past influences events taking place in the present time.  I like reading politics and writing articles. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
