The head of the Iranian Intelligence Service says an “Israel-Arab” plan to assassinate Qasem Soleimani has been foiled. Hussein Taeb said members of the team that were supposed to carry out the assassination were identified and arrested. Taeb has announced the failure of a plan to assassinate Soleimani, which he said had been “planned for several years” by the “Arab-Hebrew security services.”
He said the plan was to be implemented in Kerman, Soleimani’s birthplace in southeastern Iran, during the Muslim holy month of Muharram, early September. However, Taeb says, the supposed combined forces failed. Soleimani, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, travels to Kerman to attend a number of Shiite mourning ceremonies.
Taeb announced the arrests of three people, adding that even though the team “were sent abroad” and “large sums of money were spent to train them and prepare them,” they were still under the surveillance and intelligence of the IRGC. The head of the Intelligence Service says the arrests took place before Tasua and Ashura (September 1 and 2). “Frustrated by their failure to upset security in Iran or to harm the IRGC military bases, the enemies had hatched an extensive plot to hit Major General Soleimani in his home province of Kerman,” Taeb said.
Qasem Soleimani is the most influential commander of the IRGC in countries such as Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, and reports of his assassination have been published several times so far. Last November, some Iraqi newspapers reported that a plan to assassinate Soleimani near Baghdad had failed, which Iraqi Army spokesman Al-Amid Yahya Rasul denied in a statement.
Retired US General Stanley McChrystal had told the Farini Magazine last February that he was likely to have been killed within the last two years when an Iranian military column led by Soleimani entered northern Iraq. In March of this year, the United States listed the Quds Guards as a foreign terrorist organization. The United States and the European Union had previously listed the Quds Force and its commander on their sanctions list.
