February 20, 2018 – University of California (US) announced that UCI along with some supermarkets, commercial catering businesses and restaurants are jointly running a program to convert food waste into electricity. The program involves a specialized process to mix the food waste through a bio slurry & pumped in to anaerobic digesters filled with bacteria that can break down the material, producing biogas containing methane which is further used to produce electricity. Some amount of the bio gas can also be converted into compressed natural gas to be used in vehicles as a cleaner bio fuel.
