- Israel objects to the Iranian military presence in Syria.
- Israel has a long shadowed record of defensive attacks on these Iranian forces.
- The missile attack from Iran indicates that they are not willing to sit quietly and be bombed in Syria.
On Tuesday morning, before dawn, four missiles were fired from Syria at Israel. Communities in the Golan Heights and Upper Galilee heard sirens. The Iron Dome defense system intercepted these rockets. This was the first confrontation between Israel and the Iran-backed military in Syria in several months. Israel has bombed Iranian military bases in Syria and Iraq, but Iran did not retaliate until this confrontation.
In defense, Israel struck dozens of Iranian targets in Syria on Wednesday morning, carrying out a wide-scale strike. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitoring group, reported that at least 11 people were killed in the attack, including seven foreign nationals. The Israeli military said that its fighter jets hit multiple targets belonging to the Iran elite Quds Force. Syrian state SANA news said that there were also civilians killed when a missile hit a house in the area. Damascus claims that their air defense system intercepted most of the Israeli missiles before they reached their targets.
The strikes further burst open what has been taking place over a long period of time between Israel and Iran in Syria. Many of the Israel attacks have not been mentioned in the news. Israel objects to the Iranian military presence in Syria along its borders. Yesterday’s attack by Iran, four missiles targeted at Israel, is seen by Israel as proof of the intention of Iran to gain a deep footing within Syria to prepare for a full-scale conflict in the future. Iran has publically stated their intention to destroy Israel. Recently in the news President Hassan Rouhani of Iran explained that the intention of Iran is not to kill the people of Israel but only to overthrow the government of the State of Israel.
The Iron Dome defense system was developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and by Israel Aerospace Industries. The Iron Iron Dome has three central components: Detection and tracking radar which gives advance notice to citizens who are in the fire range of these missiles. In this way the whole population is not affected at once, only a specific area gazed by Iron Dome Radar. The four missiles were fired toward the Golan and sirens were heard in the Golan and Upper Galilee bordering the Golan but not in northern cities like Tiberias, Kiryat Shemona, Sefad and Hatzur. The second component is battle management and weapon control also developed in Israel. The third component is the missile firing unit which launches the Tamar interceptor missile equipped with electro-0ptic sensors and several steering fins for high maneuverability also developed in Israel.
Without the Iron Dome defense system, Israel would have long been destroyed by the thousands of missiles shot at them from Gaza, and these more powerful missiles used by Iran-Syrian forces. In this way Israel has been able to refrain from sending troops into Gaza and Syria to neutralize completely their enemies.
