France Ready to Read PS752 Black Boxes

  • The French Institute for Aviation Safety said it had responded positively to Iran's request to read the black box of a Ukrainian passenger plane.
  • France and Canada have pressured Iran on the reading of the black box of the Ukrainian passenger plane.
  • President Zelensky announced that Ukraine was not ready to wait forever for Iran to fulfill its obligations to the victims of the IRGC's missile attack on its aircraft.

The issue of reading the black box of a Ukrainian passenger plane seems to be coming to an end. French officials have announced that they will begin reading the black box on July 20. The passenger plane was shot down by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps on January 8.

Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 (PS752) was a scheduled international passenger flight from Tehran to Kiev operated by Ukraine International Airlines, or UIA. On 8 January 2020, the Boeing 737-800 operating the route was shot down shortly after takeoff from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran, which attributed it to human error.

The French Institute for Aviation Safety said it had responded positively to Iran’s request to read the black box of a Ukrainian passenger plane. The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Revolutionary Guards are responsible for a missile strike on a Ukrainian International Airlines Flight, Flight 752, a Boeing 737.

The plane was shot down by an IRGC missile. Reuters reports that France and Canada have pressured Iran on the reading of the black box of the Ukrainian passenger plane. According to the report, PS752 from Tehran to Kyiv was targeted by an IRGC surface-to-air missile, killing 176 people on board.

The task of repairing and reading black box information and pilots’ conversations will begin on July 20. The Canadian aviation authorities have announced that they will send a team to Paris to cooperate and participate in the reading of the black box of this aircraft. It should be noted that 57 passengers on this plane were Canadian citizens.

A spokesman for the American National Transportation Safety Board also said he was involved in reading the black box on the plane. This is normal for air accidents involving US-made aircraft. Reuters also stressed that it was unclear whether the United States, like Canada, would send a group to Paris to do so, or whether it would work remotely to read the black box.

Iran-Canada Relations

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) (‘Army of Guardians of the Islamic Revolution’ or Sepâh for short) is a branch of Iran’s Armed Forces, founded after the Iranian Revolution on 22 April 1979 by order of Ayatollah Khomeini. The Revolutionary Guards state that their role in protecting the Islamic system is preventing foreign interference as well as coups by the military or “deviant movements.”

The Islamic Republic of Iran has called on Canada to take steps to normalize its diplomatic relations with Iran. Diplomatic relations between the two countries have been severed since 2012. Reuters reports that Iran has not set the stage for normalizing its diplomatic relations with Canada as a precondition for sending a black box of a Ukrainian plane to France.

A Canadian official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, told Reuters that relations between the two countries could be normalized. According to the Canadian official, Canada’s priority at the moment is to investigate the IRGC’s missile attack on the plane and to pay compensation to the victims’ families.

Iran’s agreement to send a black box of a Ukrainian airliner to France has not been met with strong criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In the first days of this week, Zelensky announced that Ukraine was not ready to wait forever for Iran to fulfill its obligations to the victims of the IRGC’s missile attack on its aircraft.

The Ukrainian president has threatened Iran that if it does not fulfill its obligations to the victims of the attack, it does not officially apologize to the Ukrainian government for the missile attack, and it does not cooperate with international officials in reading the Black Box information against Iran, he will appeal to the International Court of Justice.
