“This is why, following a Defense Council meeting chaired by the President, it was decided to suspend all passenger travel, including freight transport, by road, air, sea or rail from the United Kingdom for 48 hours from midnight (Paris time) this evening – December 20th.” announced a French government source in a statement.

The decision comes after the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Ireland and Bulgaria effected similar measures.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, called for a video conference to share information with the countries of the European Union on the new strain of Covid -19 detected in the south of the United Kingdom.

The virtual meeting also aimed to “share the measures” taken by the 27 EU member states to combat the spread of the new coronavirus, sources in Brussels stated.

The event “involves representatives of member states”, but “not at the level of leaders”, the same sources specified, on a day when the leaders of France, Germany, and the European Union were already meeting digitally over the same issue.

The head of state of France, Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, analyzed the new variant of the new coronavirus, but the results of their meeting haven’t been announced yet.

The video conference meeting took place a few hours after the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, and later Germany and Austria decided to suspend flights and sea transport from the United Kingdom, where a new variant of the covid -19 emerged.

Spain on it’s part went further and asked Brussels for a coordinated Community response to ban air traffic with the Kingdom United, avoiding a “unilateral” measure

Britain Authorities alerted the World Health Organization ( WHO ) about the discovery of the new variant of SARS – CoV -2, which accelerates the transmission up to 70%, and the organization appealed to its members in Europe to “strengthen controls “.

Although there is evidence that the new strain is more lethal or that may impact the effectiveness of vaccines developed, the UK prime minister Boris Johnson, was forced to modify the plans for the country’s population movements during the Christmas season.

According to UK scientists, the new strain appears to be responsible for the alarming increase in infections in London and several southeastern counties and eastern England and forced to confine more than 20 million people.

The United Kingdom is on the list of the 10 countries most affected by the pandemic, with more than two million cases of infection and 67,401 deaths.

News reporting is my thing. My view of what is happening in our world is colored by my love of history and how the past influences events taking place in the present time.  I like reading politics and writing articles. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
