German Russian Dual Citizen Charged Treason

  • Demuri Voronin charged with high treason.
  • He holds both Russian and German citizenships.
  • Voronin remanded in custody until April 13, 2021.

Russia announced Demuri Voronin has been charged with treason. Voronin is a dual citizen of Russia and Germany. It would be imperative for Germany to take a pro active approach to aid him. Clearly, the Russian citizen Alexei Navalny was aided by Germany, including providing him with the German security services proaction, during Navalny stay in Germany.

The Attorney, Paul Nicholas Whelan is a Canadian-born American resident with British and Irish citizenship. He is described as a corporate security director. He received a bad conduct discharge from the US Marine Corps. He was reported to have previously worked as a police officer in Michigan.

Furthermore, Demuri Voronin was arrested this week by the Lefortovo Court K and has been charged with  high treason. The Article 275 of the Criminal Code of Russia defines treason as “espionage, disclosure of state secrets, or any other assistance rendered to a foreign State, a foreign organization, or their representatives in hostile activities to the detriment of the external security of the Russian Federation, committed by a citizen.

If convicted, Voronin is facing between 12 to 20 years in prison. It is plausible, if in fact he was involved in the espionage and convicted, Voronin could be swapped. To note, Paul Whelan lawyer stated this month that there are discussions of the spy swap between Russia and US. Thus far no details are available pertaining the swap.

According to the close friend of the Voronin, he was arrested right after an outing on the Valentine Day in one of the Moscow bars. Voronin. fiancee resides in Germany and it is unclear, if she will be traveling to Russia. There are also no calls from Germany or the West to organize any type of protests to support the political scientist.

He is remanded in custody until April 13, 2021. There are no details available in regards to his case and all court proceedings will be classified, due to the national security threat.

Moreover, there is a speculation that Doronin arrest is related to his Ivan Safronov connection. Safronov has been charged with the high treason last summer. According to the  FSB, Sofranov passed classified information to a representative of the special service of one of the NATO countries.

The alleged information passed contained data on military-technical cooperation, defense and security of Russia.  The allegation that Voronin worked under the guise of the political scientist to transmit classified information to the North Atlantic Alliance member nations.

Alexei Anatolievich Navalny is a Russian opposition leader, lawyer, and anti-corruption activist. He came to international prominence by organizing anti-governmentC

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance between 30 European and North American countries. The organization implements the North Atlantic Treaty that was signed on 4 April 1949

However, Voronin did work as a foreign policy consultant on the energy issues at the Bundestag. The Bundestag is the German federal parliament. It is the only body that is directly elected by the German people on the Federal level. It can be compared to a lower house similar to the United States House of Representatives or the House of Commons of the United Kingdom.

Voronin worked for about a year in the consulting capacity. Upon looking further into his background, it is quite surprising that he was able to obtain such position within the Bundestag.

The consulting company “Red Sost” which  he is a former CEO and co-owner  has offices in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Berlin The Red Sost specializes in the energy and International politics consulting. It is unclear, if the company was a front for the intelligence operations.

Overall, it is highly likely there would be more high treason charges this year. The Navalny cohorts already considered to be foreign agents and it is plausible there could be treason charges coming against some of them.

This week Navalny inmate status was changed to at risk of fleeing the country. Therefore, it could impact the type of visitors he could get in the future and the prison he would be serving his sentence.
