- Ukraine is becoming a hot bed for information warfare.
- Is that a sign of Putin's Russia gearing up for a propaganda campaign 2.0 in an attempt to meddle in the upcoming US elections?
- This information warfare campaign is meant to discredit all American efforts in maintaining democracy in Ukraine, and bears Putin's imprint.
A new Ukrainian media campaign could be a provocation to the United States. Last week a documentary aired on Ukrainian TV Channel News One with an agenda to discredit US efforts at democracy in Ukraine.
The scenario resembles Afghanistan and recent statements by the former Afghan President Hamid Karzai who claimed the US is trying to meddle in the upcoming September 28, 2019 presidential elections there. The former Afghan president is insinuating that Afghan citizens have no influence over who the US installs into the executive office.
The documentary is a targeted attack against the US. Ukraine is becoming a hot bed for information warfare. The allegations made in the documentary claim US handlers meddled in the previous Ukrainian election, resulting in the election of Petro Poroshenko. The truly disturbing false narrative names FBI agents and even a US federal prosecutor. It would be nearly impossible for the FBI to have been involved in Ukrainian politics, as it does not have such a mandate. If anything, it would have been a role for the CIA.
The doc features an interview with Alexander Onishenko, a Ukrainian oligarch and billionaire currently residing in Spain. His implication is that the NABU (National Anti-Corruption Bureau ) is a front for US meddling in Ukraine’s sovereignty. The NABU is a new body in Ukrainian law enforcement, created after the Revolution of Dignity with the purpose of cleansing government of corruption in order to enable the formation and development of a successful society and efficient state.
Founding and launching NABU was one of the requirements set by the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and the European Commission in exchange for the relaxation of visa restrictions between Ukraine and the European Union.
On 14 October 2014, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Supreme Council of Ukraine) adopted the Law “On the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine.” On 16 April 2015 the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed two decrees:
- № 217/2015 – decree on founding the National Anti-corruption Bureau of Ukraine; and
- №218/2015 — decree on appointing Artem Sytnyk the Bureau’s Director.
The doc’s false propaganda narrative insinuates the US and NABU carried out an active campaign to extract and destroy any “kompromat” on Poroshenko from Onishenko. Later, this was to be used to control Poroshenko if he was re-elected. These are claims of coercion including alluding to NABU’s involvement in the promotion of corruption and bribery.
Another claim: In September 2018, the SAPO (Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in Ukraine) accused NABU detectives in an attempt to install a cable to spy on the prosecutor’s office.
Additionally, the doc also rehashed the Joe Biden story that appeared in the New York Times earlier this year. The mention of Paul Manafort and even the 2020 US elections (in passing) is an obvious attempt to create a divide. Is that a sign of Putin’s Russia gearing up for a propaganda campaign 2.0 in an attempt to meddle in the upcoming US elections?
Former Ukrainian President Poroshenko is the focus of over 20 corruption probes. The investigations focus on tax evasion and money laundering, including acquisition of the Pryamyi Kanal and Kuznya shipyards located in Kyiv.
Almost a year ago NABU opened an investigation into the Rotterdam Plus Formula – a method used to calculate the prices of coal. The Donbass region is in the center of it. The National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission (NEURC) introduced with ease the notorious “Rotterdam+” which specifically benefited Rinat Ahmetov who is directly linked to Poroshenko.
The doc also detailed false implications of US embassy employees being handlers of Ukrainian politicians, including the recall of US ambassador Marie Yovanovitch from Ukraine under the Trump Administration.
It is clear Ukraine is shifting towards Russia under newly elected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. An attack on the US with this documentary and its airing in Ukraine is the clear sign, including the despicable release of US federal employee names under the “fake news” narrative. This information warfare campaign is meant to discredit all American efforts in maintaining democracy in Ukraine, and bears Putin’s imprint.
History tends to repeat itself. Will Ukraine be another Afghanistan? The US intelligence community needs to take a further look at this growing security danger. The global ramifications could have tremendous effects on the West.
