- The US is imposing new sanctions against Russia.
- The sanctions supposed to impact the Russian space industry and the arms trade.
- The Kremlin will retaliate against the new sanctions.
The First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Vladimir Dzhabarov, made a statement regarding retaliatory measures against the United States for imposing new sanctions against Russia. These sanctions would stem from the poisoning of dissident Alexey Navalny in August 2020.
There is a new video with an alleged phone call made by Mr. Navalny to his “killer.” The scenario is staged and highly likely not accurate. According to Mr. Dzhabarov:
“We need to pay attention to the tradition. The outgoing President of the United States Donald Trump finally imposes sanctions. The precedent was set by Barack Obama in 2016 right before he was leaving the office. If earlier, the Americans achieved superiority in the world at the expense of advanced technologies, scientific developments, financial transactions, now they have given the leading position to China and are trying to make up for losses through unfair competition.”.
Clearly, the last part of the statement is flawed. China is not a leader. In fact, China is known to steal technology instead. Furthermore, the new sanctions are in relation to Russian and Chinese companies purchasing specific products made in the US. The banned US products are mostly related to the electronics used in the space industry.
Probably, our competent authorities will decide on retaliatory sanctions, and American restrictions will not cause serious damage to Russia. The Americans themselves are cutting the branch on which they are sitting. In particular, in the field of space exploration.
How will the ISS work, where Russian cosmonauts are working closely with the American astronauts, Dzhabarov asked. He also suggests that the International Space Station should just be dumped in the Pacific Ocean. It should be noted that Russia is working on a new space station to replace the ISS.
According to Russian media, the ISS’ replacement will consist of five modules weighing 60 tons. The whole complex can hold the weight of up to 200 tons. The new station will be smaller in comparison to the existing ISS.
To note, it will be the second largest space station ever built. It is expected that the Plesetsk Cosmodrome will be the main launch pad for the space ships to travel to the new station.
Currently, the sentiment in Russia is that the West won’t help, and that Russia is ready for the new sanctions. It is highly likely that the newly-elected US President, Joe Biden, will take a tough stance on Russia. Nevertheless, the US still has to have diplomatic relations with Russia.
The propaganda in Russia is that the US is afraid of superior Russian technologies in the defense field. Russia is indeed the leader in hypersonic weapons technology.
It is a given that the Kremlin will retaliate against the sanctions. Just this week, Russia retaliated against the EU for its new sanctions. It is clear the tensions between Russia and the West will continue.
Alexey Navlany’s relevance will eventually be done and he would just be another failure. However, he will remain relevant in 2021.
