- The Gamalei Center did a presentation for the New York City colleagues.
- The Russian vaccine got registered before the Stage 3 trial phase.
- Some US citizens already got the Russian vaccine.
Scientists at the N. F. Gamalei Center held the first online briefing on the main stages of the development of the Sputnik V vaccine for an American audience. The discussion was attended by more than 100 doctors and medical staff of the Maimonides Medical Center, one of the most reputable medical institutions in the United States.
This is reported in a press release of the Russian Direct Investment Fund. This is also the first briefing of its kind. According to the press release, since March 2020, there was an interest pertaining to the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.
The Russian scientists from the Gamalei Center told their US colleagues about the main stages of development of the Sputnik V vaccine, including the results of clinical trials, as well as the progress of post-registration clinical trials currently underway.
The Head of the Department of Cardiology at Maimonides, Professor of Medicine Dr. Jacob Shani said:
“We read a publication in The Lancet, and it was also very impressive. The vaccine showed good results in the first and second phase clinical trials, including the formation of antibodies and cellular immunity, and side effects were minimal. This all sounds very encouraging. At the moment, we know that it causes the formation of antibodies and is safe. Now we need to confirm that it does protect against coronavirus infection. I personally asked if any of the vaccinated volunteers got sick, and the answer was no. I would very much like to know about the results of vaccination of more numerous groups.”
On August 11, Sputnik V received a certificate of registration from the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, becoming the world’s first registered coronavirus vaccine. On September 4, one of the world’s leading medical journals, The Lancet, published a scientific article with the results of phases 1-2 of clinical trials of the vaccine earlier this month.
The data provided showed the absence of serious adverse events and the formation of a stable immune response in 100% of the study participants. It should be noted that the vaccine has not completed Stage 3 trials. Therefore, it is still not known what side effects and issues it can possibly have.
Moreover, there are Facebook posts as of today, stating that US nationals got the vaccine, some of them are affiliated with the WWE in some capacity. They are also asking for volunteers to try it. There are no official information of having US trials whatsoever. That could possibly have serious health ramifications.
Gamalei Center states that they have over 40,000 volunteers. Nevertheless, the results are not available as of yet. The earliest the results will be available in November.
Some volunteers reported having flu-like symptoms after the vaccine. Additionally, the vaccine is political, and every nation involved is rushing to have theirs on the market, but the safety for consumers should not be compromised.
