Israel — Joe Biden and Abraham Accords

  • Israel is to form defense alliance with some of the Arab states.
  • It could be in direct competition with NATO.
  • The alliance is meant to put pressure on the Joe Biden administration.

The Israeli–Palestinian conflict is the ongoing struggle between Israelis and Palestinians that began in the mid-20th century amidst the greater Arab–Israeli conflict. Various attempts have been made to resolve the conflict as part of the Israeli–Palestinian peace process. Most Recently by Donald J Trump resulting in the historic Abraham Accords.

Benjamin Netanyahu is an Israeli politician who has served as Prime Minister of Israel since 2009, and who previously served from 1996 to 1999. Netanyahu is also the Chairman of the Likud – National Liberal Movement.

The announcement by Joe Biden was made pertaining the creation of the defense alliance between Israel and the number of the Arab states. It is an interesting development after an Israeli owned ship explosion in the Gulf of Oman. The incident was reported by the Jerusalem Post on February 26, 2021.  The crew of the ship survived, but there is a concern, the explosion could be the result of the US-Iran tensions.

In the past, Israel preferred not to have direct dealings with the Arab states. Almost all communication was facilitated through the US. The US military doctrine always included the interests of Israel.  Hence, the announcement of the new alliance could be interpreted as disrespect to the US interests. In fact, it would be direct competition with the US doctrine. It should be noted, the US provides a lot of aid to Israel. Could it be that Israel is asserting itself not needing the US?.

Furthermore, Israel is number one in the world in the drone industry. In addition, Israel has the most advanced combat ready army in the Middle East. Nevertheless, the Arab states have a lot of funds to purchase the most advanced and the latest weapons.

Thus far, majority of the arms purchases made by the Arab states are political in nature. Certain arms deals between the US and the Arab nations are made in exchange of the symbiotic deals in the other sectors. Hence, arms purchases stimulate US economy and weapons production.

Moreover, Israel would not ever go to war alone with Iran. Even the new alliance between the Israel and some of the Arab states would not dare to go to war with Iran. There would need to be agreement with the US and Russia should be factored in the equation.

Russia is reasserting its interests in the Middle East and soon Israel would have to a accept the scenario. In the future, it is plausible Israel would have to have certain negotiations with Russia.

Hypothetically, if the new alliance delivers a limited air strike, there could be consequences that Israel would not be ready for. Hence, there is a great possibility the new alliance is a plot to put pressure on the United States.

The Joe Biden administration will not show favoritism to Israel the way former US president Donald Trump supported Israel. In Trump case, he has family relationship with Israel via his daughter Ivanka.

The new alliance can also put pressure on the US lobby. In fact, the US lobby is very powerful in the United States and it could lead to forcing Joe Biden administration to pay attention to the Israel needs.

Overall, it would be up to US to either give in or ignore the bluff of the alliance creation and the geopolitical interests.
