I am sure most adults remember the Beatles song, “All we need is love”. Due to the coronavirus, nothing could be more important today than loving are neighbor. Neighbor according to God’s Word is everyone! Webster Dictionary defines” love” as: 1. strong affection 2. Warm attachment 3. Attraction based on sexual desires 4. a beloved person 5. unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for others. Webster defines ”hate” as: 1. intense hostility and aversion 2. an object of hatred.
Love according to God’s word: 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
Our first act of love must be toward God and next loving our neighbors just as much as we love ourselves. Matthew 22:37-40 “Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Anything that we put in front of God is idol worship and God hates idol worship!
Hate is the opposite of love. It is impatient, unkind, it covetous, prideful, self- seeking, easily angered, unforgiving, delights in evil, discredits truth, only concerned with self, has no trust in God, always negative and seldom perseveres. Hate causes destruction to others, but affects the hater also! In an article from Everyday Health: “The Destructive Power of Hate” dated 11/15/2017: “Poison isn’t always something you eat or drink-it can be an emotion. And hate is one of them, eating you up inside and causing destruction”. It goes on to say: “While hate can be almost anything-animals, food, jobs, movies-the most destructive is hatred toward other people”. Another quote from, Siddhartha Buddha: “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one that gets burned”.
Following are warnings that God gives us regarding not loving our neighbor: Matthew 23:12 “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Matthew 5:22 “But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment”. Matthew 5:44 “I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew 6:15 “But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 7:1-2 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Matthew 7:12 “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:19 ” Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven”. Matthew 12:36-37 36 But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
How you or anyone avoid eternal damnation? Matthew 6:33-34 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” How can I seek God or the kingdom of Heaven? Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” How can I be righteous, meaning “right with God”? Believe in God’s free gift. Jesus, God’s one and only Son, Jesus, who paid the price for your all your sins through His shed blood on the cross. Just repent and believe! If you are not for Jesus you are against Him. Matthew 12;30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.”
God knows what is best for mankind, to love one another! John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Romans 12:10 “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Romans 13:8“Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. Galatians 5:13“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” Ephesians 4:2 “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” 1 Thessalonians 4:9 “Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.” 1 Peter 3:8 “Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.”
God couldn’t be clearer about love verses hate and its eternal effects on man. What has caused love to grow so cold and calculating today? The answer is “secularism”. Webster defines secularism as: “indifference or exclusion of religion.” Over time we have departed from the love of God to the love of stuff; whether it be the love of material possessions, power, your spouse or family. Many of us have become idol worshipers of everything but God our creator and Jesus our Lord and Savior.
Polarization in our country has never been greater and has separated both family and friends in many instances. Race-baiting, name calling and violence are the result. America needs to get back to our roots, “In God We Trust.” We also need to get back to the truth, not Satan’s seductive lies. For truth, check it out in my book: “The Truth Will Set you Free, Eleven Myths Satan Uses to Deceive Man.”
Another great resource to help our neighbor: “Developing Our World, Making Our World a Better Place One Village at a Time”. Developing Our World’s mission is to help the poor in undeveloped countries through a holistic approach rather than just throwing money at a problem. In many instances that can cause more problems than it solves.
