More than 1,000 guests have been quarantined at a hotel in Tenerife after an Italian doctor and his wife were found to be infected with coronavirus. The doctor had flown in from Lombardy, a region that has experienced a surge in Covid-19 cases in the past week. He has been quarantined at a local hospital and will undergo additional tests to make sure that the initial results were accurate. His wife is also in isolation and being treated at the facility.
The Situation in Tenerife
On Tuesday, a guest at the hotel posted on Facebook a photograph of a note slipped under the door. It read in part as follows.
“We regret to inform you that for health reasons, the hotel has been closed down. Until the sanitary authorities warn, you must remain in your rooms.”
Spanish media reports that compliance with the order is being enforced by security forces and that guests are not allowed to leave the hotel.
One guest who spoke to the BBC confirmed the reported state of affairs, revealing, “the hotel has been cordoned off but we’re trying to make the best of what’s going on. We haven’t been given any more information other than the note but we’re going to just wait, try and enjoy the holiday and see what happens.”
The total number of coronavirus cases worldwide currently exceeds 80,000, with China having the highest number of incidences.
On Monday, The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that a global pandemic is imminent. Although reported deaths are less than 2 percent, experts fear that the mortality rate could go much higher.
Meanwhile, the outbreak continues to have an impact on the global economy. In London and New York stock prices have plummeted as a result. On Wednesday, Dow futures plunged 379 points. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures also performed poorly. The effect has also been noted on Japanese exchanges.
U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed Vice President Mike Pence to lead coronavirus efforts. The announcement came just after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that a California patient was the first recorded case in the U.S. to get the virus from an unknown carrier.
Italy Scrambles to Contain the Epidemic
Italy currently has the highest number of coronavirus cases in Europe, with over 300 infected persons. Last weekend, authorities announced a series of emergency measures to contain the epidemic.
Eleven small towns in Lombardy and Veneto were put on lockdown. Over 50,000 people are under curfew. They are prohibited from leaving their homes without special permission.
Numerous events, such as football matches and church gatherings, have been canceled to curb the spread.
Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has called for calm and warned that fear-mongering and panic would only cause more problems. In his words, “panic is a completely unjustified reaction that compromises the overall efficiency of the system and triggers regrettable speculations on the prices of some products.”
