Alabama’s Amazon warehouse workers have gotten a boost in their bid to unionize. Stacey Abrams, a Georgia democrat has encouraged the workers to vote to join the union. On a video posted on Saturday, the leader called on the workers to form a union so that they make their jobs more ‘secure, safer and stronger.’
Abrams called for democracy in the work places and stated that for the people of color in America, the unions have been their allies. The leader said that the unions have negotiated for safer working conditions for workers and even secured the PPEs during the coronavirus pandemic.
Abrams, a former gubernatorial candidate and a voting rights activist said that the workers deserved to be treated with dignity and that can only be advocated for by a union. During her 2018 campaign for governor, Abrams was endorsed by the state’s major labor groups because of her support for them.
The workers who are about 5,805 with a majority of them being blacks, have continued to fight for their right to join the union despite their employer’s opposition. If the plan to unionize sails through then the workers at the company’s Alabama warehouse will be the first to do so in the United States. It will be a landmark achievement. The organizers believe that the success of this campaign will lead to call for better wages and working conditions at Amazon facilities and other major firms.
The mail-in voting which began on February 8 will continue till end March. Amazon has continually opposed the unionization of its workers. It is alleged that Amazon had launched an anti-union website that aim at emphasizing union dues so as to dissuading the workers from joining the unions. Some of the staffers are believed to be under immense pressure to vote against.
In 2018, an anti- union training video that was distributed to managers at one of Amazon’s grocery chain was leaked after an attempt by the workers to form a union. Amazon, an online retail giant, is the second-largest private employer in the United States after Walmart Inc.
The company has suffered numerous strikes protesting unsafe working condition in its facilities. The countries that have had protests against Amazon are Poland, France, Italy and Spain. According to Amazon more than 19,800 of its workers contracted Covid-19 last year.
The country attributed this to the high demand of goods from people who were stuck in their homes. Amazon was forced to keep its facilities open in order to satisfy the needs of the customers hence the huge number of infections. Earlier in the month, Amazon sued New York’s Attorney General Letitia James. In the complaint the company accused the attorney general of overstepping her boundaries. The company said that the Attorney General’s office had been investigating safety concerns raised by its employees and alleged that the Ms. James had threatened to sue them.
