Pompeo Accuses China of Withholding Coronavirus Information

  • Pompeo also voiced concerns about the disinformation campaigns launched by China, Russia, and Iran in regard to the ailment.
  • China has denied the allegations, and accused the U.S. of defaming China, politicizing the epidemic.
  • There are currently over 500,000 Covid-19 infections worldwide.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has hit out at China for withholding information needed to contain the coronavirus. Speaking on Washington Watch radio on Wednesday, he criticized its government for failing to disclose the severity of the situation at the beginning of the pandemic.

Mike Pompeo is an American politician, diplomat, businessman, and attorney who, since April 2018, has served as 70th United States secretary of state. He is a former United States Army officer and was Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from January 2017 until April 2018.

The laggard public pronouncement and what seems to be a deliberate cover-up caused the virus to spread to countries that were caught off-guard. He also voiced concerns about the disinformation campaigns launched by China, Russia, and Iran in regard to the ailment. Some of the countries are promoting the narrative that coronavirus originated in Italy. China has suggested that Covid-19 was part of a US military biological warfare project.

Pompeo said that China was trying to deflect responsibility in regard to the biggest epidemic in modern times. “My concern is that this cover-up, this disinformation that the Chinese Communist Party is engaged in, is still denying the world the information it needs so that we can prevent further cases or something like this from recurring again,” he said.

There are currently over half a million Covid-19 infection cases worldwide. Over 21,000 people have lost their lives due to the ailment in just 3 months. Pompeo called for greater transparency between nations while underlining that China was not too keen on doing this.

“This is an ongoing global crisis, and we need to make sure that every country today is being transparent, sharing what’s really going on, so that the global community, the global health care, infectious disease community can begin to work on this in a holistic way.”

China has, on the other hand, dismissed the allegations and asked America to desist from uttering inflammatory remarks and politicizing the problem.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), also known as 2019-nCoV acute respiratory disease (2019-nCoV ARD), and novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) is a viral respiratory disease caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). It was first detected during the 2019–20 Wuhan coronavirus outbreak.

The US will be Shifting Production Facilities

Pompeo has said that the United States will be shifting most of its production facilities from China to America to insulate the economy against the effects of unforeseen catastrophes, such as the current crisis. Going by his statement, medical plants will in the future have to be situated in America and not in other countries. He proclaimed that heavy reliance on states such as China could potentially plunge the nation into a myriad of complex problems.

What Really Happened?

The Covid-19 virus was first detected in December by Chinese health authorities in Wuhan. It is not clear how the pathogen jumped from animals to humans. Some reports indicate that an animal vector carrier may have been involved.

Other unconfirmed expositions theorize that the virus originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology and spread through accidental exposure. There has been a lot of finger-pointing, especially now that new cases of Chinese infections are down to zero from a peak of 81,000. The swift progress has raised eyebrows and spawned a slew of conspiracy theories.

How the country has been able to combat the virus in just two months has led to skeptics calling their bluff on the epidemic. There is speculation that the Chinese government is withholding crucial information necessary to turn the tide in the fight against the epidemic, which is killing over 1,000 people a day.
