Ruhollah Zam Execution- Iranian Foreign Ministry Summoned German Ambassador

  • The European Union (EU) and the French government on Saturday (December 12th) issued separate statements condemning the execution of Ruhollah Zam, founder and director of the Amnnews Telegram channel.
  • French government called Mr. Zam's execution "barbaric" and contrary to Iran's international obligations.
  • “We are shocked by the circumstances surrounding the conviction, particularly by the preceding kidnapping from abroad,” the Germany foreign office said.

The German Ambassador, President-in-Office of the European Union, has been summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry on behalf of the Union and has been informed of “the extent of the protest by the Assistant Secretary-General and Director General for Europe of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs”.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the German ambassador in response to an EU statement condemning the execution of Iranian journalist Ruhollah Zam.

The head of the French embassy in Tehran is also scheduled to be summoned to the Foreign Ministry “following the French Foreign Ministry’s intervention statement” on the execution of Ruhollah Zam, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.

Ruhollah Zam was an Iranian activist and journalist. He was best known for operating a Telegram channel named ‘Amadnews’, which he founded in 2015. Zam played a high-profile role in the 2017–18 Iranian protests, during which he devoted special coverage.

The European Union (EU) and the French government on Saturday (December 12th) issued separate statements condemning the execution of Ruhollah Zam, founder and director of the Amnnews  Telegram channel. The European Union (EU) has condemned the death penalty “in the strongest possible terms” and reiterated its opposition to the death penalty “under all circumstances”.

The statement called on Iranian officials to “ensure the rights of the accused to a fair trial and to end the use of televised confessions to prove their guilt.” In other statements, the French government called Mr. Zam’s execution “barbaric” and contrary to Iran’s international obligations.

“We are shocked by the circumstances surrounding the conviction, particularly by the preceding kidnapping from abroad,” the Germany foreign office said.

The French Foreign Ministry said that the country “condemns in the strongest possible terms this gross violation of freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Iran.”

The Amnnews site and channel, the founder of which was executed, Rohullah Zam, became famous for publishing certain news items that seemed to have been transmitted by influential people within the government. Some of this news was later confirmed by the official media or the Iranian authorities, and some denied.

One of the main issues of concern to Iranian security officials was the high penetration rate of Telegram Amnnews during the January 2017 demonstrations, which gradually increased the group’s audience to more than one million.

Some of the news on this channel, including the issue of Mirtaher, the replacement of Ayatollah Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, was not an issue for which there was any evidence to confirm it.

Some believed that Ruhollah Zam spread the news knowing that he was wrong for psychological warfare. And some have argued that security agencies provide information to the channel for any motive, in order to achieve its goals and invalidate it. The news also left Zam practically alone among political activists in France.

Meanwhile, relatives of Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Hassan Rouhani, as well as relatives of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, were accused of providing information to Ruhollah Zam. Hassan Abbasi, a controversial conservative speaker Mahmoud Alavi, the Minister of Information to support Mdnyvz accused the charges leading to prison sentences for him.

Amad News published material and a video in which Judge Abolghasem Salavati, a judge of the Revolutionary Court, was accused of moral corruption. The person who eventually became the judge hearing the case. And it made lawyers question the extent to which his death sentence was based on personal grudge.

This report is about the list of some controversial news of Amnnews, which was reflected in other media some time later and caused the officials of the Islamic Republic to react.
