- The new vaccine will start to be distributed in March.
- The Russian doctors will choose for themselves, which vaccine to use.
- The new vaccine is expected to enter phase III trials in April 2021.
Russia registered third coronavirus vaccine. Coronavirus continues to be a serious barrier for the world economies. Currently, there over 111 million infected and over 2.4 million deaths around the globe. The new vaccine was developed by the Chumakov Federal Scientific Center for Research and Development of Immune-and-Biological Products of Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to the developers, the KOVIVAK vaccine passed the first phase of the clinical trials, which had 400 volunteers. The vaccine is recommended for the people between 18 and 60 years of age. However, the age range could be expanded after the 2nd trial phase.
Furthermore, the scientists stated that the main difference between “KOVIVAK” and existing anti-covid vaccinations is the use of the fragments of the Coronavirus proteins or its genetic material. The Chumakov vaccine includes whole virus particles. “They are inactivated and are no longer able to cause any harm to the human body. However, they do provide immunity against the Covid-19 virus. The 600 samples for the vaccine development were selected from the Russia famous red zone Komunarka hospital in Moscow.
Moreover, the developers believe that the whole-virion vaccine has one main advantage. The anti-ovoid vaccinations introduce the immunity only to the individual. “Both peptide vaccines (EpiVacCorona), and adenovirus vaccines (Sputnik, AstraZeneca), and mRNA vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna) protect only the “entrance gate” to the cell: they form immunity to the S-protein, from which the coronavirus spike is built,” said Konstantin Chernov. KOVIVAK is expected to start Stage III trials in April and there expected to be 3000 volunteers participating in the final phase of testing.
Next month, the first 100 thousand does of the vaccines will be delivered and used on the Russian populous. The target is to produce 10 million doses of the KOVIVAK vaccine by December 2021. Russia plans to increase the Covid-19 vaccinations in March.
It should be noted, wealthy Ukrainians have been traveling to Russia just to be vaccination against the Coronavirus. Ukraine still does not have a Covid-19 vaccine and thus far none have been delivered. Ukraine also refused the Russian first Covid-19 vaccine Sputnik V.
Overall, there are debates pertaining the principles of the distribution of the new vaccine. Thus far, Russia has two other vaccines and it would be imperative how the three vaccines would be distributed to the public.
According to the Russian Ministry of Health, it would be up to the doctors of which vaccine to choose for their patients. The third vaccine is expected to have the least side effects after the vaccination. At present, there is not enough data to support the statement.
It is a possibility that different regions within Russia will receive different vaccines. Thus far, there is no information, if the KOVIVAK vaccine would be exported and licensed.
Sputnik V has been exported and there are licensing agreements in place as well, especially in the Latin America. Mexico is expected to start vaccinating its populous with the Sputnik V vaccine.
In conclusion, the Coronavirus pandemic has to be eradicated this year, Even though there is a possibility of the third wave in the spring.
